Linda Richman

The Venkmans entered HalfCab once again, and this time, they used a click track! Besides just the addition
of a click track, a ton of time went into this, and only this, song. The result is a really excellent (if I do say
so myself) punk/ska tune. Grab this one for a nice demo of how The Venkmans are doing now and how some
of HalfCab's more recent recordings are sounding.

Winter
|
This song by Corkscrew (Dave Maddux), features one of the most creatively timed guitar lines I've heard
in a long time. With drum support by Brian Mirsch of Parallax, this song sounds absolutely AMAZING. You
seriously need to check this one out and hear the pure inventiveness.

Mary
|
An acoustic song by J-Walker
that extolls the virtues of a certain plant. Not that anybody they know would ev...eh forget it.
You'll like it. Get it.

196

Charlie (One on None) recorded this song with the help of his friends from the band 3 Prong Outlet.
Charlie plays acoustic guitar and sings, and 3 prong aided him by putting in drums, bass, and backup
vocals. Check out this fast-paced acoustic rock song, for sure. Recommended by me :)

Deodorant Bath
|
An upbeat ska song about the merits of using deodorant to shower, as opposed to taking one of those
classically wasteful, "real" showers. Mr. Vas Deferens uses a rocking, horn-aided melody to convey this
idea, and things don't let down until the last beat. If you want an irreverent song and a sweet money-
saving tip all in one, definitely check this song out.

Relief
|
This song, by The Coincidentals, is reminiscent of Alkaline Trio material, and it's good, rockin
punk stuff. Short and sweet at slightly under two minutes, this song entertains while it shows off
the great potential of this young band. If you want to hear something cool, listen to the first ten
seconds of Relief; there is a quiet noise that sounds like a horn stab. This puzzled me in the studio,
because although it was on beat and sounded good, we had never added a horn ANYWHERE. Take a look. It's eerie.

Integrosphere
|
"Oh my oh my slap-pop rock crazy crazy." These are the words I have chosen to describe
this HalfCab Records recording. My friend Dan, and his as-of-yet-unnamed band, came in and rocked out
completely. Their style is like hard, old-school Incubus, replete with matching vocalist. I mean, these vocals are hard,
in tune, and straight up good funky Incubus style. Now, I don't mean that they're an Incubus rip, because they're not; I'm
just trying to set the tone for this song. And you know what that tone also consists of? A brain-rattling slap-pop bassline
that was put down on a 5-string by an incredibly talented player. Every member of this four-piece group showed talent in the
studio, and it's my opinion that it came through in the recording. Are you interested yet? Good. Get it.

Headfirst into Heaven
|
Aaron, of Annihilate Now!, recorded this song. It's acoustic guitar and vocals, and it's incredible. You really
have to hear this. Seriously, if you think there's any chance you might like acoustic guitar or singing or both,
you really, really need to get this song. If you don't download this song, they won't feed me! Please! Downl--ok
that's enough hype. It's awesome.

Runaway
|
Split 66 was slated early to be on our new compilation CD, and since we both had a day free, they came to the studio! "Runaway" is a rockin song that took quite a while to do,
but came out great. If the rest of the comp goes this way, everyone at HalfCab will be ecstatic. Download and get a sneak preview of the soon-to-be comp :)

On My Own
|
This song is by Stupid Hero. It rocks. "On My Own" has maybe the catchiest chorus ever, and it will force you to hum it. When you do, however, you may realize that you
have no idea what the words actually ARE. Well, there's a reason for this: some of them are very inane. Let me give you a clue...."onnnn myyy ownnnn. *guitar* drawnnnn, rock, pen, and stone."
This is one of my favorites. Have at it. Find out more at their website.

Say Goodbye
|
This song is by Stupid Hero. It also rocks. "Say Goodbye" is the most ballad-like and pretty emo song on the entire Stupid Hero CD. Brian sings, and he has something
natural and almost deep to say. Click click and download; it's good. Find out more at their website.

|
All We Need
|
This song is by Stupid Hero. Not surprisingly, it rocks, too. "All We Need" is a real crowd pleaser for Stupid Hero. As they tell it, anytime they show up to a party,
the calls for this one start before they can finish saying hi. Check it out. Find out more at their website.

Fantasie Pastorale Hongroise
|
Liz needed a recording for a flute audition, and this is one of the two songs she recorded at the HalfCab studio. It's a gypsyish number with a flirtatious melody line and some technically impressive flute playing. Check it out :)

Ryan's Poem
|
Ryan recorded one of his poems at HalfCab a month or two ago, and it sat around the recording computer, unnoticed, for quite a while. However, Dave and I found it during one of our Corkscrew sessions, and we realized that something drastic must be done immediately.
For, you see, this wonderful spoken-word piece was too proper and in need of bastardization. Dave plugged in his keyboard of coolness once more and loaded up the soundpatch that contains such musical staples as "cowbells 1 through 25" and "carhorn with clown attachment and whistle."
In not long at all, the piece had a new backbone and beat structure, but it was still lacking. In response, we set up a condenser mic and proceeded to scream "REMIX" and "2002" overtop of the entire disaster. The result is undeniably funny. Honk honk.

This is a song that Dave wrote on keyboard. He threw on some distortion, too. Killer. And, I'm pretty happy with the sound.

Jah - Flaming Trainwreck Mix
|
New Venkmans stuff. This was our first attempt at a full song. I did hours and hours of mixing and some mastering on it. Things I've since improved include:
guitar, drum miking - LOTS. So anyway, future stuff wil be mo' bettah (not that this is bad really, just sayin.) Go get it :)
NOTE: I'm very angry at this song. I am unhappy with it. Eventually I will remix and maybe even rerecord it. Until then, I
think it's awful. Feel the bitterness. P.S. I renamed this song with a clever tagline about burning trains.

|
Thank You, Andy
|
NOTE: UNMIXED....with that said, this is a 20 second song where the ever-mature venkmans thank andy for gas that he shared.

Illuminati mastered
|
This is the first non-test recording from the HalfCab studio. Well, actually it was designed to be a test, but it came out so nicely that we kept it :)
Dave's song, played on acoustic guitar by Dave, recorded by a stereo pair of Audio-Technica 3035's. Enjoy. It's instrumental with only one guitar part.

Lenny
|
Ben came to check out the studio, and he didn't know I was recording his idle guitar doodling. This is a take of him playing Lenny, by Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Mastering efforts total about five minutes, because I was only worried about it so his friend could check out how things sound. I gotta say though, parts of this
track shine, even though it's thin (only one instrument, one take), and Ben isn't too thrilled with it. Well anyway, I say check it out :) Peace

I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free
|
Scott came to the studio, and he brought some of his jazz music with him. After an impressive performance at a coffeehouse, I had invited him to drop by and put his playing on record,
an offer that he took me up on. In only a short hour or two, he recorded three of his favorites, using no overdubbing and almost no editing. The result? A true performance, like
what you heard at the coffee house, small flubs and all. I might throw another one up here soon, too. This piece was written by jazz pianist Billy Taylor,
and here is Scott playing it.

Bucketcore 1
|
Bucketcore was a thing Dave and I started years ago. See, I'd be over at his house, and he'd be playing guitar, and since I only play trombone really, I would walk around like an idiot. So, I got some buckets and hampster cages and played "drums" along with it. And it was good (bad), and we called it PunkX.
And then Dave got some buckets too and stopped the guitar, and it was even better (worse), and we called it Bucketcore. Now that I've given this a fabulous lead up, here's a song we did bucketcore style. Except then we added a million other tracks just because we could and hey shutup :)
Bucketcore.

Bucketcore 1 with commentary track
|
Same song as above but with fresh (boring and stale) audio commentary! Like DVD (not like DVD)!!

Okay
|
I "wrote" this song. I say "wrote" because I don't want to really take credit for a progression of C, Am, Em, G, because I'm sure it's not new or anything. But anyway, I was goofin around on Dave's keyboard and played this, and it stuck. Soon other parts were added, and we recorded this in Mandy's studio room through her nice Mackie mixer.
This came before the main studio was actually set up. Take a listen and tell me if you think it was recorded to a four-track, because it was. The key was not using the mic pre's in the four-track; those are poor. Instead, the mixer did the real work and the four-track just recorded it; giving it a nice, listenable sound. Try it. 100% more listenable than most demos, guaranteed.

Sway
|
I made this song back when I was convinced that my SoundBlaster Live with bay attachment was the ruler of all things recording. Obviously I had a good reality smacking before HalfCab came about, but my forays with that card sparked my interest into building a studio. I got to play with layering sounds, sequencing loops, making mics sound good- all sorts of stuff.
So anyway, take a look at this spectacular trip into the world of no-name dynamic mic and SBLive recording. I didn't even have a mic stand at the time, so I put the mic on my music stand, with its cord wrapped around in a way that kept it up and pointing at me. Then, I used my masterful Frooty Loops program to add a royalty-free drum loop I found and to sequence the bits
of the song. As the critic would say, "It stinks," but his show got cut like the kid with the 25 minute mile time on the first day of peewee football tryouts. And I like my song, so there. I mean, listen. Thanks.
