InterAguadilla team has been selected as one of 19 U.S. institutions to participate in the "2024 USDA Agricultural Export Market Challenge" competition organized by the Federal agency of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), in collaboration with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), both in Washington, DC. Among the 19 U.S. institutions selected to participate, we are the only ones from Puerto Rico.

Forest fires, torrential rains, droughts and extreme heat affect the countries that supply the archipelago, forcing an increase in local production, according to experts.

 

On an island that imports 85% of what it consumes, seeing the shelves full of products in supermarkets, despite the fact that the last natural disaster was a year ago with Hurricane Fiona, does not hide an irrefutable fact: Puerto Rico is at the mercy of the ravages of climate change in the countries that supply it with food, agreed multiple voices consulted by El Nuevo Día.

For around 10,000 years since the origin of agriculture in the Neolithic, modern humans had been using artificial selection for the improvement of crops and livestock. Previous to that period of time, humans had to live on what they found in the wild by hunting, fishing, and collecting seeds and roots to eat. In this context, Neolithic represents to human history the shift from a hunting-gathering economy to the direct production of food.

José Zamora, a researcher from the Agriculture Extension Service at the University of Puerto Rico, warns about the risk of importing pineapple seeds from Costa Rica due to the possible presence of the fungus Fusarium Oxysporum which could terminate local pineapple production.
