Conservation of El Samán forest came after an extensive struggle to prevent the construction of a drugstore

 

Ponce - A community struggle that lasted more than a decade ended recently with a resounding victory for environmental protection, resulting in the first acquisition of an urban forest by the conservationist organization Para la Naturaleza (PLN) and the rescue of an important lung near the urban center of this municipality.

Scientists from the Department of Marine Sciences (DCM) of the University of Puerto Rico's Mayagüez Campus (RUM) are raising concerns about the accelerated deterioration of the quality of the environment and the state of the marine communities that make up the ecosystem of the La Parguera Nature Reserve (RNLP), the most developed in Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico Conservation Trust announced the creation of a new division called "Para la Naturaleza" (translated as 'for nature'), focused on protecting 33% of land in Puerto Rico by 2033. Currently only 8% of land in Puerto Rico is protected, according to the Trust's executive director, Fernando Lloverás.
