Scientific Publications

What good would science do if findings, ideas, and experimental designs were not shared with others? Scientists share information in many ways, from making presentations at conferences, to writing books or reviews, but the golden standard for communicating reseach findings with others is the peer-reviewed article. Peer-reviewed articles provide all the important details of an experiment so that it may be properly evaluated and replicated, and the strict process of revision and comments from peers ensures that published information is trust worthy.

Scientists from the UPR of Río Piedras publish in the prestigious Science magazine

Ariadna S. Rubio Lebrón's picture

Evolutionary biologist Riccardo Papa and his team presented important findings using butterflies.

In the field of evolutionary biology, studying philosophy, time and space is unusual. However, Dr. Riccardo Papa and his team of students from the Department of Biology at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) did just that, and what they found earned them a publication in the prestigious scientific journal Science.

After collecting data for three and a half years, the group found that, in essence, there is no single path to evolution. That is, the same result can be reached in different ways; in this case, in the field of development, evolution and morphology (how living things are formed).

Invitation to test a Web crawler

Edel Garcia's picture

Search engine robots (search bots) traverse the Web, looking for servers hosting Web documents. Once found, a document URL is visited and URLs present in it are followed. The first, last, or any of the discovered URLs is then visited and the process is repeated. This is what is known as crawling or spidering the Web.
