Professional Information

Institution: University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez
Positions: Academia, Associate Professor
Fields: Biotechnology, Genetics, Genomics, Microbiology
Project: My laboratory focuses in the discipline of Microbial Biotechnology and Bioprospecting. We seek the development of biosensors for toxin and toxin producing microbes, and the detection of activities from microorganisms in soil using functional genomics, and combinatorial chemistry technology. Also, we utilize microbiological, biochemical, physiological and molecular approaches to isolate, and identify purple-non sulfur phototrophic bacteria, other microbes with Biotechnological potential, and the development of genetic tools to manipulate them. Jus recently, and as part of an USDA-CSREES grant, we are combining conservation, and the discipline of metagenomics, and forest in order to do conservation of natural resoruces based of the richness of the soil by generation metagenomic libraries, and searching for novel activities with medical and biotechnological applications.

Personal Information

About me: Dr. Ríos-Velázquez borned in La Playa de Ponce, and finished High School in Dr. Alfredo M. Aguayo. He completed a BS in Industrial Microbiology and a Biology MS from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPR-M). In 2000, obtained a PhD in Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and afterwards, he completed post-doctoral studies at the National Institutes of Health Dr. Rios-Velázquez is currently an Associate Faculty and a researcher in the Biology Department at UPR-M, and Co-director of the Center for Hemispherical Cooperation in Research and Education in Engineering and Applied Science (CoHemis). His two passions are research and education, specifically in Microbial Biotechnology and Bioprospecting (MBB). The MBB laboratory developed by Dr. Ríos-Velázquez at UPR-M has trained more than 180 undergraduate students from Biology, Microbiology and Biotechnology, and several MS students. Besides having a teaching license from the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, and being a supervisor of the teachers’ preparation program, Dr. Rios-Velazquez has participated in initiatives for teaching Biotechnology to secondary students and teachers, and designing novel team-work educational methods to develop research skills, and engage students in active research.
