A defender of science: Dr. Edwin Vázquez de Jesús

Dr. Edwin Vázquez de Jesús was a product of Puerto Rico's public education system.  He graduated from Miguel Meléndez Muñoz High School and then did his bachelor's degree in Biology at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. He continued his academic career obtained his master's degree in Microbiology at Long Island University in New York, and pursued doctoral studies at City College of the City University of New York. He completed his studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus with a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology.  

The Yale Ciencia Academy welcomes a new class of young science leaders

This summer, 16 young science leaders from 15 institutions across the U.S. and Puerto Rico kicked off their year as fellows of the NIH-funded Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) for Career Development. Led by Yale University’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the non-profits Ciencia Puerto Rico and Science Communication Labs, YCA equips biomedical and health sciences PhD students from historically marginalized backgrounds with the knowledge, skills, and networks they need to find great postdoctoral positions that will further their academic interests and career goals.

This August, our Ciencia Puerto Rico team welcomed two new members: Dayanna N. Seguí Moró, Benjamin (Ben) Runyon and Kevin Rubén Lebrón. Dayanna is the new Coordinator of L’Oreal For Girls In Science-Puerto Rico, where she will contribute to the development of skills in young Puerto Rican girls and help them become mentors for other girls in our Seeds Of Success program.

Dr. Armando Rúa de la Asunción, professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received a $1,250,000 grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, which will allow him to expand his research in experimental physics for the next five years.

Dr. Rúa de la Asunción, who is the first scientist to win this grant in Puerto Rico, was selected along with 20 other researchers from the first cohort of 2023, who will have these funds to address their innovative ideas in a more creative way, as well as to promote advances in their field.

This past June and July, Ciencia Puerto Rico was fortunate to host three interns of the PARACa (from the Spanish acronym for Empowerment and Retention of Agents of Change) Summer VISTA Fellowship 2023 (PARACa). We want to congratulate Isaac Correa Pagán, Natalia Ramos Rivera, and Marylys Rivera for successfully completing their internships and thank them for their valuable contributions to our team!

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Dr. Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, on her selection to the Empowering Career Pathways Multidisciplinary Committee of the prestigious scientific organization AAAS. Reporting to the organization's leadership, the committee will develop practical tools and recommendations to break down barriers to entry into STEM careers and improve talent retention.

With a mix of emotions we announce that our dear colleague, Edmy Ayala Rosado, who served as CienciaPR's Community Projects Manager and Science Outreach Specialist, has moved on to become the Director of Communications and Community Impact at the Centro para la Reconstrucción del Hábitat. For 3 years, Edmy was an important part of our work team, leading, among other things, the communication and health promotion campaigns of Aquí Nos Cuidamos and working hand-in-hand with community leaders through our Community Science Laborato

Accepted at Brown University: Paraded at RUM master's graduation and wedding on the same weekend

In a world where numbers and equations are usually seen as cold and abstract, in math they found so much more. Mónica Colón Vargas and Geraldo Enrique Soto Rosa, who in the same exciting weekend, graduated with a 4.00 grade point average from the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Mayagüez Campus (RUM) and joined their lives in marriage. In addition, they were admitted to pursue doctoral studies at Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League university.
