Conversations with Scientists: Non-Research Careers

Giovanna Guerrero-Medina's picture

Your training as a scientist gives you a lot of skills that can be applied to many other sectors. Many life sciences PhDs find fulfilling employment in jobs as varied as science policy, consulting, publishing, law, funding, etc. But how do you make the transition from academia to a new sector? How can you sell the skills you gained as a PhD to work in positions where laboratory research is not involved?

During this Yale Ciencia Academy for Career Development (YCA) Conversation with Scientists, graduate fellows in the program spoke with three scientists who have pursued careers away from the bench. Our speakers included,

A pilgrimage through Puerto Rican Science

Francis Heber Gonzalez's picture

To be in a cold, inhospitable climate, with your colleagues telling you stories of people disappearing under the snow in winter storms makes anyone second guess his decision to leave the beaches of my homeland for the cold winters of Boston.

After moving to that inspiring and musical city, somehow I learned of an initiative called Ciencia Puerto Rico, and they  had created a website. I thought: "More boricua nerds, good! What a great idea!" So I went to the site, created a profile and invited all my friends from the Chemistry Department at UPR-Mayaguez to join.

Medicine in India: experiences of a Puerto Rican in the subcontinent

Roberto Hurtado's picture

Learning about a style of medicine with its roots in nature and the adaptability of the human body was one factor that influenced my decision to make an expedition to the Indian subcontinent in order to pursue my development as a healthcare professional.

I’m currently a student of allopathic medicine (American practice) and have been a patient of this paradigm in healthcare methodology for the last 21 years.  But I have always been curious about healthcare systems in other parts of the world.  How do cultural and geographical variations affect the doctor-patient relationship? And what about countries with fewer resources and availability of doctors, how do they endure and overcome those challenges?

Role Models

Marvi Ann Matos's picture

Years ago when I joined Boeing, I read an article written by Dr. John Tracy, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and one of the Executive Council members at the company. The article pointed at the importance of diversity in business and in it, I learned about John, his Hispanic heritage and that prior to pursuing his PhD, he was a math teacher. Many years later after reading the article, I have the privilege to sit down with this great man and ask him about his role models. Before we start, I wanted to share with you briefly, some of John’s accomplishments.

Científicos del RUM ofrecen alternativa para medir la biodegradación de explosivos en Vieques

Alvin Alexis Crespo Bellido's picture

An Adventure in Puerto Rico: Research, Rental Cars, and Red Trees

Eloise Flora Yount's picture

Greetings CienciaPR community,

My name is Eloise Yount, and I am proud to say that I have the opportunity of conducting research at the UPRM in the interim period between my third and fourth years as an undergraduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I am pursuing a degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering, and with that degree I plan to lay the foundation for a career focused on sustainable technology/renewable energy development and implementation.

The great experience at REU in Reconfigurable and Multifunctional Soft Materials

Gabriela Corali Del Valle's picture

Nowadays, the bubbles are of great importance on different research areas, such as, the environment, the nuclear and medical scenarios. However, many aspects of the bubbles remain unknown. For this reason, under the mentorship of Dr. Silvina Cancelos and the graduated student William García, we pretend to understand their behavior. For this we are generating a micro bubble in hyaluronic acid and exposing it to a three dimensional acoustic field.

REU Experience in Puerto Rico

Angel R. Agrinsoni-Santiago's picture

This summer I am participating of the RMSM REU program at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Participating on the computational catalyst group, where we are trying to elucidate the activation of methane over different zeolites. The group brings me the opportunity of learning more about the computational work. This research experience has been complemented with different workshops, where they are teaching us how to conduct a proper research.
