Twenty-six students were recognized by a prestigious fellowship program

The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF- GRFP) is perhaps the most competitive and prestigious scholarship for doctoral students interested in a variety of disciplines related to science, engineering, technology and mathematics.

We are pleased to celebrate with you the names of twenty-three students from Puerto Rican universities who received this prestigious award and of three students who received honorable mentions. Only 17% of people who apply are awarded the scholarship.

The NSF-GRFP award has supported in the past the launch of the scientific careers of current luminaries such as the computer scientist and founder of Google, Sergey Brin, the economist and author of Freakonomics, Steven Levitt, and physicist and former Secretary of the Department of Energy, Steven Chu.

The prestigious scholarship completely covers all expenses for graduate school and provides a generous annual stipend of $ 32,000 for three years. Fellows also have access to opportunities for career development and international internships.

Among the winners is our dear colleague, Edwin Rosado Oliveri, member of the CienciaPR Volunteer Team, and appropriately, leader of this blog devoted to celebrating our “Cerebros Boricuas” (Boricua Brains). Edwin, who is now in his final year of undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, will use the fellowship to fund his studies at Harvard.

Congratulations to Edwin and to all the winners and students recognized with distinction. They are a source of pride!

Below, we list the names of students from Puerto Rican undergraduate institutions who received the award or an honorary mention. If we mistakenly omitted mention of a student, or if you know of other Puerto Rican students in institutions outside of Puerto Rico that received the award, please email us to include them in this blog recognition.
