Puerto Rican student gets $25,000 grant to research underground waters

Norma Torres Torres, graduate student at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez was awarded a $25,000 fellowship from the Ford Foundation to investigate the contamination of underground waters in limestone regions in northern Puerto Rico.

EarthEcho International, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping youth with resources to act now for a sustainable future, has selected Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico student Nashalie Irizarry as one of 20 young environmental leaders from across the United States who will help tackle the global water crisis starting in their local communities. As part of the inaugural EarthEcho Water Challenge Ambassadors initiative, Nashalie Irizarry will increase knowledge of local water resources throughout  the Municipality of Ponce by monitoring local water quality and engaging their peers in water quality monitoring and conservation events.

 

Polytechnica University Wins First Place in Cyber Competition

A team of 10 students from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico won first place in an international competition called "Capture the Flag (CTF)". The competition was founded by the US Department of Energy and funded by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Reconocen investigaciones de profesora de la UPR Humacao

En reconocimiento a las investigaciones científicas realizadas por la profesora Desireé Cotto Figueroa, directora del Observatorio Astronómico de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) en Humacao, la Unión Astronómica Internacional (IAU por sus siglas en inglés) le asignó el nombre (11456) Cotto-Figueroa al asteroide previamente conocido como 1981 EK9.

“Orgullosa, honrada… de los más grandes honores tener un asteroide a nombre de uno y saber que va a estar por cientos de años”, expresó Cotto Figueroa en un comunicado de prensa.
