Puerto Rican students receive awards in prestigious scholarship programs

We would like to congratulate Dr. Nicolle Rosa Mercado, a Borinqueña who was recently selected for the ultra-competitive Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, and Yale University for her PhD, Nicolle was also part of our Yale Science Academy program in 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University.

RUM student receives $10,000 from prestigious Google video game grant

Nicole Noemí Román Correa is the only young woman enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico to be part of the select group of scholarship recipients.


University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus (RUM) student Nicole Noemí Román Correa was selected to receive the Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Gaming 2022.

The scholarship will grant her $10,000 to cover her study expenses and an invitation to a virtual conference to meet the other winners and Google leaders.

Puerto Rican microbial ecologists represent Puerto Rico at ISME18, the International Congress on Microbial Ecology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Ivette Perfecto: a pioneer in agroecological research

The veteran Puerto Rican scientist was exalted to the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.

With an impeccable career and more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Ivette Perfecto has excelled in the development of agroecological studies, with research focused on the dynamics and functioning of ecosystems, as well as the application of ecological theories in agricultural systems, which have been of great relevance to the international scientific community.

Director of the Manatee Conservation Center of the Caribbean receives Humane Hero Award for his dedication to animal welfare

Dr. Antonio Mignucci, director of the Manatee Conservation Center of the Caribbean, received the Humane Hero Award from the American Humane organization in recognition of his three-decade career advocating for the humane treatment and welfare of animals.

Mignucci won the award as a finalist for the Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation, which honors those who achieve significant positive changes in conservation practice, theory and research.

Estudiante del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez de la UPR recibe la Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Gaming

Student Nicole Noemí Román Correa, who will begin her fourth year this semester in Software Engineering (INSO) at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received the Generation Google Scholarship for Women in Gaming 2022. The scholarship grants her $10,000 to cover her study expenses and an invitation to a virtual conference to meet the other winners and Google leaders.

The schoolgirl, a resident of Hatillo, is the only young woman enrolled in a Puerto Rican university who is part of the scholarship cohort, which includes 258 students from the United States, Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Trece jóvenes entre las edades de 15 a 19 años tuvieron la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia de investigación y exploración científica durante la primera edición del Biology and Society Summer Camp 2022, organizado por el Center for Academic Research (CAR) junto a la Escuela de Salud y Ciencias de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón.

Puerto Rican woman becomes first female psychologist on major American Medical Association panel

Idalia Massa is a native of San Lorenzo and a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rican Idalia Massa became the first psychologist to join the Panel of Editors of the important American Medical Association's (AMA) Compensation Guidelines.

Massa, who currently resides in Denver, Colorado, was nominated by the American Psychological Association to represent the field at the U.S. level on the prestigious committee.

Then, last week the AMA accepted and appointed the Puerto Rican to the panel, which was celebrated by the APA for being the first time that someone from the field of psychology is on the panel.

New Fortress Energy awards scholarships to five students at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus

June 28, 2022. San Juan, Puerto Rico - As part of New Fortress Energy's (NFE) mission to boost the communities where it operates by increasing access to quality education, the company awarded scholarships to five engineering students at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez (UPRM) to help them continue their educational journey. The recipients of the NFE emPOWER Puerto Rico 2021-2022 Scholarship at UPRM are Kevin W. Rodríguez García, Penélope O. Nieves Colón, Adriana Danielle Kleshick Segarra, Kevin Caleb Caraballo Irizarry and Miguel A. de Jesús Soto. Each student will receive $5,000 to be used for tuition and academic expenses. This is the first year that UPRM students will receive the scholarship.
