Supporting Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona

Giovanna Guerrero-Medina's picture

On Sunday, September 18, 2022, Hurricane Fiona made landfall in southwestern Puerto Rico, the same area most impacted by the 2020 earthquakes. Fiona has left a catastrophic amount of rain and damage across the archipelago. Most people are without power and many are without water. All this, just days before the five-year anniversary of Hurricane María today, on September 20th. Puerto Rico has barely recovered from the man-made disaster that followed that storm, the legacies of which are still physically and emotionally present.

A group of health professionals, scientists and physicians questioned the lack of action by the local Department of Health in the face of the high number of COVID-19 infections in Puerto Rico and offered specific recommendations to improve the public health response at this point in the pandemic. The statements were made during a press conference organized by the NGO and scientific collective Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org). A recording of the conference (in Spanish) can be accessed on Ciencia Puerto Rico's YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/jk8Qq2bpb4Q).

In light of the flexibilization of COVID-19 mitigation measures in Puerto Rico, the NGO and scientific collective Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org) is calling on the public not to lower their guard and be prepared to respond to a possible surge in cases. This comes following a recent increase in the positivity rate in the country and ongoing surges in Europe and Asia caused by the Omicron subvariant BA.2.

A call to support science and the University of Puerto Rico

Giovanna Guerrero-Medina's picture

As the university system that has produced (by far) the largest number of Hispanic/Latinx STEM PhDs in the U.S., the University of Puerto Rico is one of the most important scientific institutions for assuring a diverse and well-trained STEM workforce. The contributions of the UPR to education and research impact Puerto Rico's economy, culture, and social well-being. This is why we share this letter from the Alliance for Science in the UPR addressed to Judge Swain and a call to our community to show its support for the UPR and its concern about the impact of budget cuts.

Alondra and Andrea will be supporting CienciaPR in communications and fundraising projects for the next year. Meanwhile, Andrea will be conducting an 18-month assessment of CienciaPR's impact and culturally relevant communication strategies and creating practical resources to increase the civic engagement of scientists.

Welcome to CienciaPR Alondra, Ariadna and Andrea!
