Ciencia Puerto Rico support summer internships for students who are interested in leadership and professional development through the PARACa program of the non-profit organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción. Here, we present a guest post by Christina López, a student at Cornell University, who participated in this program with Ciencia Puerto Rico during the summer of 2014. CienciaPR receives large federal grant to promote scientific professional development

New Haven, CT - The nonprofit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org) received a large grant to establish, in collaboration with Yale University, an innovative program to transform the training of young scientists in Puerto Rico and the United States. The funds, which amount to over $1.6 million over five years, were awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Puerto Rican Science well represented at #SFN2015

Puerto Rican science was well represented in the annual conference of the Society for Neuroscience (SFN) recently held in Chicago, IL.  More than a hundred Puerto Ricans represented us in different sub-disciplines of neuroscience. This is the largest neuroscience conference worldwide, with more than 30,000 participants representing more than 80 countries. The event provides an ideal environment for the dissemination of recent scientific findings and to promote collaboration between scientists and help in the development of tools and ideas to advance neuroscience research.

During the 2015 SACNAS National Conference, Drs. Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer and Yaihara Fortis-Santiago from Ciencia Puerto Rico took part in this workshop offering tips and advice on how you can support your career advancement by cultivating a professional and personal network by identifying advisors, mentors and sponsors. Presented at the 2015 SACNAS National Conference by Drs. Mary García-Cazarín, Yaihara Fortis-Santiago, Kermin Martínez-Hernández, Nahyr Rovira-Figueroa, and Mónica Feliú-Mójer. 

#SACNAS2015: How Social Identity Influences Interest and Persistence in STEM

Social identity, or the intersection between race/ethnicity and gender identity, strongly influences women and underrepresented minority (URM) students’ interest and persistence in STEM. CienciaPR Team members Dr. Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer and Dr. Yaihara Fortis-Santiago co-organized and co-chaired this session at the 2015 SACNAS Conference to discuss recent research findings as well as strategies that may help promote congruence between social and scientific identity. Presenters included Dr. Paul Hernandez from West Virginia University, Dr. Kenny Gibbs, Jr. from the National Cancer Institute and our own Dr. Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, Executive Director of Ciencia Puerto Rico and Director of the Yale Ciencia Intitiave.

First, a reflection:

Access to science opportunities—to the privilege and power of science—is not equitable nor equal. This was my truth—and that of many people I know—growing up. I didn't have much access to role models, to programs, to information. I didn't know I could be a scientist. Once I became a scientist I made it my mission to leverage my knowledge and privilege to make science accessible to people like me. 

Yale Ciencia Initiative is Recognized by White House for Answering Call to Action on Hispanic Education

For a second time this year the Yale Ciencia Initiative has been recognized by The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (WHIEEH). This time the organization has been highlighted for committing to launch The Voice of Experience, a bilingual online resource to help inform students about career possibilities in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) through the examples and “voices” of successful Latino STEM professionals.

Washington, D.C. – Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR, www.cienciapr.org), the world's largest network of Puerto Rican scientists and a project managed by the Yale Ciencia Initiative, was recognized by the White House as a "Bright Spot” in Hispanic Education. The award was granted by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

CienciaPR is 1 of 17 initiatives across the entire United States to be highlighted in the area of ​​science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The community, which through an innovative web-based platform brings together thousands of Hispanic scientists, students and educators worldwide, was recognized as a leader in promoting science education and careers in STEM among Hispanics.
