#SACNAS2015: Social Media and Effective Science Communication

Mónica Ivelisse Feliú-Mójer's picture

[Updated November 4, 2015]

First, a reflection:

Access to science opportunities—to the privilege and power of science—is not equitable nor equal. This was my truth—and that of many people I know—growing up. I didn't have much access to role models, to programs, to information. I didn't know I could be a scientist. Once I became a scientist I made it my mission to leverage my knowledge and privilege to make science accessible to people like me.

Puerto Rican neuroscientist and graduate student David Schwarz is part of Walk Again (Andar du Novo), a project that will allow a paraplegic Brazilian teen to control a robotic exoskeleton with their mind to execute the inaugural kick at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

This event will be historical for many reasons. First, it is the culmination of years of research and the collective work of hundreds of scientists around the world, from engineers, to computer scientists, to neuroscientists.

Second Tertulia CienciaPR: Science Policy

Uldaeliz Trujillo's picture

We continually hear in the news discussion about topics of global significance such as energy or health reforms, national security, global warming, the food crisis, and the fiscal budget and its impact on innovation and competitiveness, among others. Although seemingly unrelated to each other, in order to be resolved all of these issues need to include considerations about science.

It is precisely at the interface of science, society and government where "science policy" lives; it is an area dedicated to applying, incorporating or translating science and technology knowledge and findings in order to develop well-informed policies or programs for the common good.
