El cambio climático trae cambios en temperatura, cambios en los patrones de precipitación, aumento del nivel del mar, olas de calor, reducción en los suministros de agua, entre otros. Y son estos cambios los que pueden alterar nuestra salud y a su vez la calidad de vida que tenemos o que queremos llevar.

My name is Nicole E. Félix-Vélez and I’m a sophomore at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, majoring in Industrial Biotechnology. I always loved science, the way the world around us can be explained in equations to solve or the thought of how the most staggering things are composed of the tiniest particles you’ll never see with the naked eye. Science just amazes me. Even more so, the fact that science is used every day by researchers or engineers to find ways to make our lives better.

El Fondo Verde para el Clima (GCF, por sus siglas en inglés) es un fondo establecido dentro del Marco de Cambio Climático de las Naciones Unidas para asistir países en desarrollo en las prácticas de adaptación y mitigación al cambio climático. Debido que “las naciones que menos contribuyen a menudo están a riesgo de perder más” dijo Barack Obama en 2014, el GCF promete proveer instrumentos significativos, relevantes y efectivos para concertar un esfuerzo global de afrontar el cambio climático. Los países industrializados se han comprometido voluntariamente a aportar $10.3 billones al GCF para ayudar a países en desventaja económica a reducir sus emisiones de gases de invernadero y tomar acción sobre los efectos irreversibles del cambio climático.

La iniciativa empresarial creativa puede aportar a crear un ambiente empresarial atractivo para nuevos negocios. La industria renovable como parte de una reforma energética debe ser central para posicionar a Puerto Rico como paladín en avance especializado de nuevas tecnologías y para solucionar la crisis financiera.

Imagine you are walking around your ideal natural paradise in the Caribbean. To me, that would be hiking in some trail at ‘El Yunque,' deep into the forest, gazing one of the majestic waterfalls it showcases. While busy contemplating your surroundings, a flower you have never encounter before mesmerizes you. You quickly get closer and utilize your senses to learn more about this beauty. After this initial observation, a few questions usually follow in our minds including: What is the name of this plant/species? Is it native to this region or is it originally from a different place? And, could this be an endangered species? In this day and age, with good Internet connection and some patience you will likely be able to obtain answers to these queries.

Un desierto, un día de altas temperaturas y dónde la lluvia es escasa, fue la primera imagen que tuve cuando supe que el término “desertificación” existía. Aunque la palabra desertificación es un proceso mucho más complejo de lo yo acabo de describir, cuando escuchamos el término “desertificación” sí debemos pensar en cómo nuestras actividades pueden crear unos procesos donde se ve afectado al terreno y todo lo que depende él.

Good morning! Are we ready to march?

My name is Mónica Feliú-Mójer, deputy director of CienciaPR. CienciaPR uses the collective knowledge of the world's largest network of Puerto Rican scientists to share science in rice and beans, to improve science education in Puerto Rico and to forge the next generations of Puerto Rican scientific leaders.

I am in love. In love with all lovers of science, scientists and citizens who were present and marched in the heat, under the Caribbean sun and expressed their love, dedication, and support for Puerto Rican science (#CienciaBoricua). We estimate some 600-700 marchers joined us. Today I thank you all. Thank you!! This is for you!

Thanks to the science teachers who dedicate themselves every day to introducing science to children and young people, those who helped us take the first step for the sake of science. Thanks to the parents who included their children in this historic event so that one day they can say I was there, I was part of that.
