Recently, Dr. Frances Colón, Deputy Science and Technology Advisor for the U.S. Secretary of State, shared the legacy of pioneer scientist and feminist Ana Roqué de Duprey. The story is part of a White House project to share the untold stories of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This essay by Melissa Cabrera Ruíz, a high school student at the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez (CROEM), won first place in the national science essay competition of the International Congress of the Spanish Languague (CILE 2016). The essay discusses the biodiversity of El Yunque the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest System.

Viva, Science in Spanish!

Last week Ciencia Puerto Rico took part in the VII International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE 2016). Through a historical collaboration CienciaPR and CILE celebrated that for the first time science had a prominent role in this Congress, the largest and most important celebration of the Spanish-language. CienciaPR and CILE collaborated in the evaluation of science essays for a national science essay competition and in the participation in an international colloquium about the Spanish language and science.

#ASCB15 Recap: Effective Science Communication and Social Media for Scientists

Recently I led two science communication workshops at the 2015 American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The first titled “Delivering Science: Effective Communication Skills to Become a Successful Scientist” aimed to provide 1) an introduction to effective communication principles and strategies; 2) tangible examples of how effective communication skills can support their professional advancement; and 3) resources that will help them strengthen their communication skills. Dallas, TX - Toxicologist Dr. Larissa Velez, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director at UT Southwestern Medical Center, has been selected as the inaugural holder of the Michael P. Wainscott, M.D. Professorship in Emergency Medicine.
 
The Professorship was created with an endowment established to honor the memory of Dr. Wainscott, who headed UT Southwestern’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program before his death in 2012 at the age of 56 after a long illness.

Neuroscientist shines at regional conference

Marla Rivera-Oliver, a graduate student at the Institute of Neurobiology of the University of Puerto Rico, was selected to present her research in the oral Neuroscience session at the Southeast Regional IDeA conference in Biloxi, MS (Nov 11-13, 2015). Marla’s presentation, "The Modulatory Effects of Caffeine on the Intrinsic Properties of Spinal Lateral Motoneurons", a collaboration with Yocasta Alvarez-Bagnarol and her research mentor Dr. Manuel Diaz-Rios, received a commemorative certificate and a $500 award. She was the only neuroscience graduate student to be selected for an oral presentation. 

We are proud of Marla, who is also a volunteer with CienciaPR. Congratulations!
