RUM graduate named presidential professor at UPenn

José Arturo Bauermeister had been appointed as a Presidental Professor at UPenn, this position arises from the Action Plan for Faculty Diversity and Excellence that seks to recruit and retain professors with exceptional trayectories in order to promote Faculty diversity. Dr. Bauermeister graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Department of Social Sciences where he investigated the stigma associated with communities affected by HIV.

Prof. Arturo J. Hernández Maldonado is to receive the Professional Achievement Award conferred by the Great Minds in STEM (GMiS™) organization

Prof. Arturo J. Hernández Maldonado, co-director of the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez’ Nanotechnology Center is to receive the 2016 GMiS™ Professional Achievement Award during the national meeting of this organization to be held in October of this year in Anaheim, CA. He is a faculty member of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering and one of the most productive and successful researchers of the University of Puerto Rico. He has been recognized several times by the institution for his accomplishments and despite his impressive résumé, he has not disregarded his commitment to students.

The Puerto Rican company, Rock Solid Technologies, Inc. has been compensating the effort and dedication of college students for 15 years. On this ocasion, they provided a scholarship and a summer job opportunity to three students from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus.

Professor from UPRM receives Paul Erdös Award 2016

Doctor Luis F. Cáceres Duque, Professor from the Mathematical Science Department at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus, received the Paul Erdös Award at the Univesity of Hamburg in Germany on July 30, 2016. This prestigious award is given by the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions for those who have played a significant role in the development of mathematical challenges in the 20th century.

Student from UPR-Mayaguez wins first place in poster competition at Annual Conference in California

Andres F. Calle Hoyos, a graduate student from the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, won first place in the poster competition during the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Annual Conference & Expo 2016 held in Anaheim, California during May 21-24, 2016.

Puerto Rico wins bronze at the International Mathematical Olympiad

Francisco Proskauer Valerio won the bronze metal at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad. The competition was held in Hong Kong and more than 100 countries participated.

14 High School students graduate from project seed

During this summer fourteen talented high school students are participating in summer resarch through Project Seed, an initiative sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS). This program takes place at the Faculty of Natural Sciences in the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.

Puerto Rico wins gold in the XVIII Central America and Caribbean Math Olympiad

The Puerto Rican team, obtained gold, silver and bronze in the Central America and Caribbean Math Olympiad celebrated in Jamaica. The delegation composed by Gustavo Santiago, Miguel Tulla y Omar Santiago, succesfully obtained the second place amongst the 13 countries competing.

DR. JOSÉ L. CRUZ IS APPOINTED LEHMAN COLLEGE’S THIRD PRESIDENT

The Board of Trustees of The City University of New York today appointed Dr. José L. Cruz, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton, and a frequent speaker and writer on higher education issues, as the third president of Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx. Chancellor James B. Milliken recommended Cruz’s appointment following a nationwide search.
