The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats are among the most affected, and their restoration will begin in March.


Despite the importance of wetlands for humans and other species, these ecosystems - historically and erroneously considered wastelands - face threats from climate change and from the citizenry itself, with actions such as drainage and landfilling, compromising their vital functions.

Ponce - A community struggle that lasted more than a decade ended recently with a resounding victory for environmental protection, resulting in the first acquisition of an urban forest by the conservationist organization Para la Naturaleza (PLN) and the rescue of an important lung near the urban center of this municipality.

As part of an effort to educate about climate change, the USDA's Caribbean Climate Center developed the "Caribbean Climate Resilience" game, an interactive tool that shows the impact of climate on the region's agricultural industry.

Jorge Bauzá Ortega, scientific director of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program, is currently leading research on contaminants of emerging concern.

 

Oceanographer Jorge Bauzá Ortega's connection to the sea began at an early age. As a child, the scientific director of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program collected seashells and sponges, among other remains of marine species, and the sample grew so large that his mother created a designated space for him to preserve it.
