Puerto Rico improves slightly in its Global Competitiveness Index

Puerto Rico moved from 42nd to 41st on the Global Competitiveness Index published by the World Economic Forum, but the country could have done better, if the organization headquartered in Davos, Geneva had received on time statistic data like the Consumer Price Index, that the Puerto Rican government has refused to make public recently.

Ronald Blackburn-Moreno, president of ASPIRA, a non-profit organization dedicated to leadership development and education of Puerto Rican and Latino youth, stated that Puerto Rico has great potential to develop a technology and knowledge-based economy in the forum “Connecting Puerto Rico towards a digital Puerto Rico: Encounter between Chile and Puerto Rico”. In addition, Blackburn-Moreno enumerated the challenges that the Country faces, which includes the lack of consensus on which specific economic development model we must follow, the political divisions, the bureaucracy and governmental inefficiency, and the lack of a public policy that promotes the development of the technological industry.

A research Project done by the Department of Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez was recently awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its remarkable proposal of commercial uses for derivatives of coal combustion. The award was granted by the Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2), a EPA program that promotes recycling and environmental conservation, during the National Recycling Conference and Exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia. The awarded project proposes potential uses and applications for the derivatives of coal combustion from the AES Puerto Rico LP power plant in Guayama.
