In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, declared by UNESCO and observed this year under the theme “From vision to impact: Redefining STEM by closing the gender gap,” Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) announced that renowned meteorologist Deborah Martorell will serve as the 2026 godmother of its Seeds of Success program.
“For me, it is an honor to serve as godmother of a program that has succeeded in inspiring, motivating, and empowering so many girls in the sciences. Semillas de Triunfo has not only opened doors, but has also cultivated a space where young women can explore their curiosity, develop skills, and, above all, believe in their own potential. Accompanying them in this journey is more than a privilege; it is a life mission. Let us continue planting these seeds of success, because supporting their dreams is, without a doubt, the greatest mission,” the meteorologist commented.
As the program’s godmother, Martorell will participate in various educational and mentorship activities and serve as a spokesperson to amplify the reach of Semillas de Triunfo and inspire more girls to develop their potential in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Her professional trajectory, commitment to science education, and leadership in the media make her an inspiring role model for the program’s participants.
“We are thrilled that Deborah will serve as the godmother of Semillas de Triunfo and support these young women who see in her a model of perseverance and dedication. I am certain that the participants will feel very proud to have her,” said Greetchen Díaz, Executive Director of Ciencia Puerto Rico.
Since its creation in 2015, the Semillas de Triunfo program has impacted more than 690 girls across Puerto Rico, providing them with tools, enriching experiences, and direct mentorship from successful Puerto Rican women scientists. In addition, the program has reached more than 120,000 people throughout Puerto Rico through community outreach projects led by its participants. Semillas de Triunfo has also impacted hundreds of schools across the Island by offering school visits and educational materials for educators, fostering early interest in science and promoting a more inclusive scientific culture.
With this appointment, CienciaPR renews its commitment to education and to expanding opportunities so that more girls and young women in Puerto Rico can envision and build a future in science.
