(Humacao, P.R.) - The Department of Physics and Electronics of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao (UPRH) announces the second season of the Futur@ Físic@ summer workshop, a free interactive experience for high school students focused on physics and electronics. The workshop will be held in both on-site and distance learning modalities during the months of May, June and July 2022.  Dates will be subject to the modality selected by the student.

"It is a great opportunity for high school students to broaden their knowledge and strengthen their competencies in the fields of science, physics and electronics, as well as to enjoy the experiences that UPRH has within their reach.  Futur@ Físic@ will be conducted by professors committed to offering unique experiences and educational activities for the development of the next professionals in this field. I urge young people to participate in this initiative," said Dr. Aida I. Rodriguez Roig, rector of the institution.

Futur@ Físic@, sponsored by NASA Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium, will provide high school students with a broad overview of the fundamentals of physics and electronics. Participants will learn about topics related to the philosophy of physics, energy, gravitation, motion, thermodynamics, waves, electricity, electromagnetism, circuits, current, resistance, microprocessors and microcomputers.

To participate in this initiative it is required to be a high school student studying between tenth and twelfth grade during the next school year 2022-2023.  Interested students can apply through the following link: https://forms.gle/YBJAEfVjWdrmdSfW6

"It is a great satisfaction to be able to provide opportunities to high school students in Puerto Rico. This workshop has the purpose of exposing students to the field of physics and motivating them to pursue a career in this area or another related to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)," said Dr. Desireé Cotto-Figueroa, coordinator of the workshop and professor of the Department of Physics and Electronics at UPRH.

Dr. Alex Camacho, instructor who will offer this workshop, indicates that the initiative will combine lectures with individual or group activities, both in person and remotely. "This experience will allow us to share with the participants a diversity of fundamental topics in physics and electronics, topics that we are passionate about as educators and scientists at the University. We are sure that the participants will enjoy and learn theoretical aspects, data interpretation and also, the use of simulators to solve problems", concluded Dr. Camacho.

For more details about this workshop, please contact the UPRH Astronomical Observatory at observatorio.uprh@upr.edu. The deadline to apply for admission is April 22, 2022.
