Emilee E. Colón-Lorenzo, a Ph.D. student from the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus, was selected to receive the prestigious American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Robert D. Watkins Graduate Research Fellowship. This fellowship seeks to increase the number of graduate students from underrepresented groups completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences. Ms. Colón will be awarded with up to $21,000 annual stipend for three years to conduct research. In addition, this fellowship gives her the opportunity to present at the annual ASM General Meeting and to attend the ASM Kadner Institute or the ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute one time during the three-year tenure of the fellowship. Emilee received a bachelor degree in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus on May 2006. Ms. Colón was accepted into the doctoral program of the Department of Microbiology and Medical Zoology, UPR-Medical Sciences Campus that same year. Her research interests are focused on the molecular parasitology field, specifically in the mechanisms responsible for the development of drug resistant parasites in order to develop novel therapies. Presently, she is conducting research on the identification of novel antimalarial drug targets and the mechanisms responsible for the development of drug resistance in vivo using the Plasmodium berghei rodent malaria model under the direction of Dr. Adelfa E. Serrano. Ms. Colon’s goal as a graduate student is to do research in the area of biomedical sciences and to apply her knowledge to benefit society by developing novel approaches to identify novel drugs targets and alternative treatment strategies for malaria control.
