Call for Abstracts 3rd Annual Conference on Understanding Interventions that Broaden Participation in Research Careers May 7-9, 2009 Bethesda North Marriott, Maryland (Washington DC metro area) Website: www.understandinginterventions.org The conference is designed for behavioral/social science and education researchers, graduate students, evaluators, and faculty in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields who participate in or conduct research on intervention programs designed to increase the number of students in the STEM PhD pipeline. Examples of intervention programs include summer research programs for minority students, peer tutoring in freshmen chemistry, graduate student retention programs, K-12 science outreach, and career development issues for women in engineering. Conference organizers at AAAS are now accepting abstracts for consideration for oral research presentations, effective strategies workshops, and poster presentations. The deadline for abstracts is March 13, 2009. 15 minute oral presentations will be grouped into topical research themes. Examples of research themes may include: - K-12 STEM outreach/academic programs that will broaden participation - Undergraduate academic and research experiences - Graduate and post-doc initiatives and interventions - Transition points in the pathway/pipeline - Faculty issues intervention (recruitment, retention, advancement) - Intersections of race & gender - Mentoring and role models - Methodology in intervention research - Studies utilizing national/multi-campus databases Suggested topics for workshops include, but are not limited to: - Effective evaluation design - Developing K-12 activities to broaden participation - Undergraduate and graduate academic/professional skills training programs - Effective community college programs and partnerships - Post doc and new faculty initiatives - Gender based programs - Mentor training for advising and cultural competency - Using campus climate studies to effect changes in the campus environment Website: www.understandinginterventions.org
