ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HEALTH AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE

The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is an urban university located in the fourth largest city in the US, and minutes away from the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. UHD reflects the diversity of the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area, and, through its academic programs, engages with the community to address the needs and advance the development of the region.

The Health and Behavioral Science (HBS) program is housed within the Department of Social Sciences, a multidisciplinary department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The HBS program is interdisciplinary, with faculty from psychology, communications, sociology, and biology working with a growing core of HBS faculty. The HBS degree has two tracks, Aging and Wellness and Healthcare Navigation, and faculty contribute to these tracks, as well as to HBS core courses, according to their disciplinary expertise.

Candidates for this position would be responsible for contributing to the program curriculum, establishing a robust program of research involving students, as well as contributing more broadly to the university’s mission. A doctorate in public health or a health-related field (community health, health promotion, human services, etc.) from an accredited institution is required at the time of employment. Candidates must be prepared to teach introductory courses in health systems, payment systems, healthcare case management, healthcare ethics, and/or health policy. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and service, and have an established area of research related to health and behavioral sciences.

In addition to the required Ph.D., candidates with a Master’s in Public Health are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates whose expertise centers on healthcare in underserved communities. Work experience in the healthcare field, particularly in the area of case management, and experience with teaching in and/or developing graduate programs, is desirable.
