http://www.usra.edu/cs/usra_scholarship_program USRA Scholarship Program The USRA Scholarship Program provides college scholarships to students who have shown a career interest in the physical sciences or engineering with an emphasis on space research or space science education. Overview We will begin accepting applications for the 2011-2012 USRA Scholarship Funds and Research Prize in June 2011. The deadline for applying is August 1, 2011. An undetermined number of undergraduate scholarships are available in amounts up to $1,000. The McLucas Research Prize is $400. Scholarships are awarded for one year only, but recipients may re-apply for a second year. Students may apply for both the McLucas Prize and for a USRA Scholarship but will not be eligible to receive both awards in the same year. Eligibility Requirements To be considered for any USRA Scholarship, applicants must be full-time undergraduate students attending a four-year accredited college or university that offers courses leading to a degree in physical sciences or engineering. Applicants must have completed at least two (2) years of college credits by the time the award is received, and applicants must be U.S. citizens. Criteria Applicants must have demonstrated or expressed interest in space research and/or space science education. Applicants must be majoring in the physical sciences or engineering. This would include, but is not limited to, aerospace engineering, astronomy, biophysics, chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, geophysics, geology, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, and space science education. Applicants must be in good academic standing at their institutions and carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. Application Procedure All scholarships will be paid directly to the recipients. The USRA Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, sex, religion, age, or national origin. USRA will not award scholarships to applicants who are not qualified and reserves the right not to award a scholarship in a given year. The Scholarships Three USRA Scholarships honor scientists and engineers who have been associated with USRA: Thomas R. McGetchin Memorial Scholarship John R. Sevier Memorial Scholarship James B. Willett Educational Memorial Scholarship The USRA Education Scholarship is a general space-related scholarship that receives its funding from friends of USRA who support undergraduate science and engineering education. Each of these scholarships is a highly competitive one-time award of $1,000 that is given to the student who best represents the goals and mission of USRA and its scholarship donors. Successful past recipients have come from many academic disciplines but all have demonstrated the academic achievement required for the scientific workforce of the future, and a passion for space exploration research or space-related education. Application materials and requirements for these can be found on their respective web pages. The John McLucas Astronaut Safety Research Prize is administered by USRA on behalf of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation and the Space Shuttle Children's Fund for the purpose of studying and improving astronaut safety. The prize of $400 is intended to encourage and promote student research that examines means of enhancing crew safety on manned space flights.
