The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for the position of Director of the Penn State Millennium Scholars Program. The program is committed to training the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), increasing the diversity of professionals in STEM-related disciplines, changing the face of STEM in the United States, and reinvigorating United States leadership in STEM fields. The Millennium Scholars Program is a very selective merit-based undergraduate program designed to increase the number of U.S. research scientists and engineers with STEM Ph.Ds. The program provides high-achieving STEM undergraduate students with the preparation and support necessary to enter competitive graduate programs in STEM and become leaders in their fields.

The Director provides oversight to all aspects of the program and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University. The Director is responsible for planning, budgeting, student recruitment and retention, designing and coordinating relevant student engagement experiences, overseeing assessment of activities, fund-raising, and the quality of teaching and learning experienced by the scholars.

The position requires an individual who can effectively lead and manage a program that is multicultural and multi-disciplinary in composition in a highly inter-disciplinary research university. Candidates are expected to have experience with multicultural programs and an ability to work effectively with a broad range of constituents including students, parents, faculty, Deans, the Office of Educational Equity, upper administration, and external advisory boards, and prior leadership experience in an academic setting. The successful candidate should have a commitment to high quality disciplinary and interdisciplinary education, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates with a Ph.D. are preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Pennsylvania State University is the land-grant University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is composed of the University Park campus, where the Millennium Scholars Program is located, and 24 other campuses throughout the state. Students in the Millennium Scholars Program select majors from one of five participating colleges at University Park: The College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Information Science and Technology, and the Eberly College of Science.

Penn State’s Millennium Scholars Program is a unique and exciting response to the growing demand for educated professionals in the STEM fields. Based on the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, a ground-breaking academic model housed at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, the program is an opportunity for remarkable students who desire leadership positions in STEM to reach their goals and ensure a bright future for themselves, their communities, and their nation. The program is open to high-achieving prospective undergraduate students of all backgrounds who plan to pursue doctoral study in STEM fields following their undergraduate education and who understand the importance of diversity in leadership positions in STEM. The Millennium Scholars Program addresses the problem of STEM program retention by assembling cohorts of ambitious students in a tight-knit learning community, where students support, inspire, and encourage one another to achieve their full potential. The expectation of

matriculation to top graduate programs is further supported by frequent academic coaching sessions, a wide variety of academic year programing, and support for participation in summer research experiences and scientific meetings.
