Intern - Bioinformatics

South San Francisco, California
Job ID: 00427842

Who We Are

At the Roche Group, about 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we've become one of the world's leading research-focused healthcare groups. A member of the Roche Group, Genentech has been at the forefront of the biotechnology industry for more than 30 years, using human genetic information to develop novel medicines for serious and life-threatening diseases. The headquarters for Roche pharmaceutical operations in the United States, Genentech has multiple therapies on the market for cancer and other serious illnesses. Please take this opportunity to learn about Genentech, where we believe that our employees are our most important asset and are dedicated to remaining a great place to work.

The Position

The mission of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology department is to provide the information systems including the methods, software, databases, infrastructure, and training required for Research to access and analyze DNA and protein sequence information and related biological data. To utilize these information systems to analyze biological information and to identify genes of therapeutic interest.

This intern will have the opportunity to work with a fast-paced group to develop the tools and algorithms necessary to expand our knowledge base gleaned from high-throughput discovery-based proteomics data related to Genentech's research into the molecular mechanisms of human disease. Employing Genentech's cutting edge computing infrastructure and mass spectrometry instrumentation, the focus of this position will be to develop and evaluate approaches to infer the most likely protein components of a sample which gave rise to the peptides identified within proteomic data generated from bottom-up "shotgun" mass spectrometry.  The successful candidate will be responsible for (1) evaluating current approaches in the field to address peptide-protein inference, (2) applying them to real-world datasets, and (3) assessing their performance through critical evaluation of their results. Based upon this data, the candidate will then (4) work to implement and potentially improve upon the most promising approaches with the goal of developing a robust solution to the problem. Through this internship the candidate will gain first-hand experience in performing cutting edge proteomic research and will gain insight into how computational biology is practically applied within the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are

The successful candidate will be (1) an active graduate or undergraduate student with laboratory experience in computational biology. The candidate must have (2) experience using a general-purpose programming lanugage, such as (but not limited to) Java or Python, and (3) familiarity with a statistical modeling language, such as R. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (with both computational and wet-bench biologists) are also necessary(4) . Experience with (5) proteomic mass spectrometry or computational methods for high-throughput proteomics is highly desired, but not essential. Exceptional or highly motivated candidates with computational biology and/or mass spectrometry based proteomics experience should apply regardless of specific background.
