SACNAS Director of Programs

Position Purpose & Summary: The Director of Programs serves a key role in the formulation, development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the organization’s programs in accordance with the SACNAS strategic plan. This role collaborates across the organization and to external audiences to mobilize the appropriate resources and staff to achieve the objectives of all programs. The Director serves as a member of the Staff Leadership Team. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Master’s degree in a related field AND at least ten (10) years experience in a relevant area; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved

Evaluation: Demonstrated success with program evaluation and measurement methodologies to assess short and long-term effectiveness and implement course corrections when necessary

Program Development: Seasoned in creating new, innovative and sustainable programming in alignment with organization’s mission, vision and values

Communication: Excellent writing, public speaking and presentation skills.  Ability to identify and form lasting and strategic partnerships with staff, Board and external stakeholders

Fiscal: Experience in developing program budgets and tracking revenue and expenses

Leadership: Proven skill in managing staff including performance evaluations, professional development plans, departmental goals and daily supervision

Logistics: Will work in the Santa Cruz, CA headquarters and must possess the ability to travel on occasion throughout the United States

Mission: Strong commitment to and alignment with the goals of SACNAS.

Desired Experience

Experience working with Chicanos/Hispanics, American Indians or other under-represented minority populations.  Familiarity with first generation or low income college student populations also helpful 

Knowledgeable about STEM and science policy.  Familiarity with the Federal government agencies and programs, such as but not limited, in particular NIH, NSF, TRIO, GEAR UP or REU

Experience with grant writing, management and reporting

Background in higher education, non-profit management, government or philanthropy  

Strong problem-solving, teamwork, project management, meeting facilitation, and leadership skills

Ability to succeed and enjoy working in a fast-paced, highly changeable environment with proven skills employing sound judgment, creativity and time management solutions

Knowledge and experience working with populations and programs for undergraduates, graduates, post doctorates and professionals

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Development 

Responsible for the development, implementation, management, supervision, and evaluation of SACNAS conference and year-round programs  

Creates new programs and identifies topics, formats and resources for the development of publications, webinars, sessions and workshops. Creates new programs in response to member needs.  Works with authors, edits materials and collaborates with communications department to produce online and print media

Guide grant reporting, writing and grant allocation processes

Identify program areas that need new or additional sources of funding work closely with leadership on creating strategy for fund development

Work with key SACNAS Committees on all of the above responsibilities

Organizational Leadership:

Enhance SACNAS’ capacities as a respected and knowledgeable organization

Motivate and lead staff to identify and accomplish key priorities and goals in alignment with the SACNAS Mission and Strategic Plan

Provide leadership, guidance and mentoring to SACNAS team

Conduct Programs Team evaluations

Partnerships/Related Organizations:

Assist in fundraising and growing diversified funding sources

When appropriate opportunities arise; the Director of Programs will participate as the SACNAS liaison/representative in national, state, and local organizations or committees having an expressed interest in SACNAS

Identify, cultivate and prioritize relationships with key strategic partner organizations and government agencies

Program Sponsorships

Works with a wide variety of sponsors, including Government, academic, corporations, foundations and societies to support program sponsorships

Work with the Executive Director to identify and cultivate key relationships in order to yield sponsorships.  Implements a system that enables and anticipates long-term planning for sponsorship management.  Responsible for achieving a targeted level of revenue per year through sponsorships
