SACNAS-SHPE- MAES Consortium - U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science PAID Summer Internship Program Available in National Labs located Across the Nation The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) have partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science to provide an exciting ten week paid summer undergraduate internship program for thirty talented students. The program aims to deepen research interests and enhance technical skills by exposing young scientists and engineers to the exciting range of opportunities offered through the DOE. The deadline is this Friday, February 1, 2008, for preferred consideration. You may apply after this date, but your chances of selection and placement may be decreased due to the limited number of internship positions available. Selected students will have the opportunity to gain valuable research experience by working with scientists or engineers on mission critical projects in a world class DOE national laboratory. Interested students can learn more about the program requirements and apply online by visiting: www.scied.science.doe.gov/scied/erulf/about.html The National Labs The DOE national laboratories are located nation wide. DOE's Office of Science is the steward of the 10 national laboratories that support the missions of its science programs. The national laboratory system, created over a half-century ago, represents the most comprehensive research system of its kind in the world. These laboratories perform research and development that is not well suited to university or private sector research facilities because of its scope, infrastructure, or multidisciplinary nature, but for which there is a strong public and national purpose. A high level of collaboration among all of the national laboratories in the use of world-class scientific equipment and supercomputers, facilities, and multidisciplinary teams of scientists increases their collective contribution to DOE and the Nation, making the laboratory system more valuable as a whole than as the sum of its parts. Information on Individual Labs More information on the participating individual laboratories, their mission and work conducted is available through their national websites: Argonne National Laboratory http://www.anl.gov/ Brookhaven National Laboratory http://www.bnl.gov/ Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory http://www.lbl.gov/ Oak Ridge National Laboratory http://www.ornl.gov/ Stanford Linear Accelerator Center http://www.slac.stanford.edu/ Pacific Northwest National Laboratory http://www.pnl.gov/ Requirements Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and enrolled as an undergraduate student. Students majoring in science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science are encouraged to apply. Students in related fields with interest in research, particularly in areas relevant to the national labs listed above, may also apply. Student selections are based on academic coursework, scientific interests, and recommendations. Students should indicate their preference for laboratory assignment so that they are assigned to a location that best matches their research interests. Applications are due Friday February 1, 2008 for preferred consideration.
