POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Medicine seeks an Assistant Dean for Basic Science Curriculum.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment, duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide vision and oversight for development and implementation of basic science curriculum to assure alignment with educational program objectives and competencies as well as compliance with LCME and MSCHE standards.

  • Provide leadership in strengthening our existing curricular program, and develop and implement initiatives to enhance strategic planning work in the area of curriculum development and renewal.

  • Assist with planning the curriculum committee agenda and facilitating completing the paperwork to obtain approval of new courses by CUNY and the Board of Trustees.

  • Provide curriculum oversight of yearly schedules, content, format, logistics, resources and vertical and horizontal integration; work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum to assure integration across all years of medical school's educational program.

  • With input from the curriculum committee, provide feedback to course/module directors that will reinforce strengths and work to identify and correct weaknesses in content, assessment methods or teaching format.

  • Chair monthly basic science curriculum subcommittee meeting to ensure efficient communication between the Curriculum Committee and the course directors about policies pertaining to curriculum and requirements for monitoring and implementing these policies.

  • Serve as liaison between the Office of Academic Affairs and course directors.

  • Serve as the administrative representative to relevant committees in the School and the College.

  • Help lead the Educational Program component of the LCME accreditation process for CUNY School of Medicine including serving on the Education Program subcommittee for LCME accreditation or other relevant LCME accreditation committees.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of assessment measures for curriculum and student learning outcomes.

  • Serve as liaison with department chairs and other leadership at the college on curricular matters.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

The Assistant Dean will possess a MD and/or PhD with at least five years of experience in medical student education including directing medical school courses, participation in and ideally oversight of curriculum committee work, and a record commensurate with an appointment as assistant, associate, or full professor. Applicants must have a distinguished track record of innovative educational leadership, scholarly accomplishment, and effective management.

The successful candidate will have management experience in an academic environment and will demonstrate highly developed consultative, negotiation, and communication skills. Experience with LCME accreditation is highly desirable.
