This position is located in the National Weather Service Division of the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration.

The individual selected for this position will serve as an intern with increasing responsibility and independence at each higher grade level; working rotating shifts and participating in the

full range of WFO programs and functions to acquire on-the-job experience necessary for advancement. The

forecast program duties include but are not limited to the following:

 

• Training in hydrometeorological forecasts including public, aviation, fire weather, flood, and marine

forecasts products.

 

• Participate in the watch/warning program and assist in issuing severe weather and flood related

products.

 

• Provide public service and other briefings as required.

 

• Receive instructions in the interpretation of the WSD-88D products and provide oversight and operate

radar to ascertain the types of echoes, and associated hydrometeorological parameters including

macroscale, mesoscale, and microscale features.

 

• Participate in the observation program, including upper air and surface programs.

 

• Operate AWIPS and other communication systems to interpret and analyze model and other data sets.

 

• Prepare various hydrometeorological observations, and assist with preparation of forecasts, and warning

products for distribution to customers and other users.

 

• Operate NOAA Weather Radio and other dissemination systems.

Selective placement factor for Carolina, PR location only: Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing in Spanish.  

 

Basic Occupational Requirement:

 

Applicants who meet the basic requirements described in the individual occupational requirements are fully qualified for the specified entry grade (GS-5).

 

You must have a degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included: (1) at least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of: (a) 6 semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics; (b) 6 semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale); (c) 3 semester hours of physical meteorology; and (d) 2 semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation. (2) 6 semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions. (3) 3 semester hours of ordinary differential equations. ((4) at least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science. Note: There is a prerequisite or co-requisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.

OR

Have a combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

OR

Currently occupy a GS-1340 Meteorologist position in the Federal government. (See the announcement for more details to determine if this clause may apply to you.)

 

 

Applicants who wish to qualify for positions at higher grade levels (GS-7 and GS-9) must also meet the requirements shown in the specialized experience factor for the respective grade levels.

 

Specialized Experience- GS-07

 

You must have a bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major AND  meet one of the following provisions for superior academic achievement , S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:

  1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
  2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

 

Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.0. If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) was taken on a pass/fail or similar basis, your claim must be based on class standing or membership in an honor society.

 

OR

Have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service. (This experience could have been gained in non-federal service). Specialized experience at this level includes: assessing the current and forecast state of the atmosphere; interpreting effects of surface and upper air atmospheric conditions and other meteorological phenomena; observing and recording atmospheric and hydrological conditions; interrogating data from remote sensors such as satellite, radar; operating computer systems used to disseminate information.

1 year of qualifying graduate-level education in meteorology, atmospheric science, other natural sciences or another field closely related to this position that  provided me with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform in this job.

Possess a combination of specialized experience as described and graduate education as described, that when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement

 

Specialized Experience- GS-09

 

You must have at least one year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to GS-07 level work in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience includes: • Preparing and issuing statements for the service area (and coastal waters, if applicable) concerning a number of hazardous weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and other server storms. • Maintain a radar surveillance of the service area using the NEXRAD system • Participating in the conduct of local studies.

OR


 Have completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science; or have 2-full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Possess a combination of specialized experience as described and graduate level education as described hat, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. (Please note that only graduate education in excess of the first 18 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)
