The application for Summer 2018 is open!

Minimum Requirements

  • Acceptance criteria for the LMH training program include:

    • 3.0 GPA or better
    • Research career orientation
    • Demonstrated interest and/or commitment to reducing health disparities
    • Excellent Spanish language oral and written skills
    • Background in research methods (quantitative and/or qualitative) and/or demonstrated social/behavioral sciences research experience
    • Undergraduates with junior or senior class standing for 2017-2018 academic year, post-baccalaureate/master level degree students, and pre-doctoral level students. 
    • U.S. citizen, non-citizen national (generally persons born in outlying possessions of the U.S.), or a permanent resident (i.e., possess a currently valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-551, or other legal verification of such status)

    Must be in at least one of the following categories:

    • From a group underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences, specifically, Black or African American, Latino/Hispanic American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Low-income individuals, meaning those whose annual income is below the low-income threshold line. This includes those who have qualified for Federal assistance programs or received loans or scholarships for those in financial need. These loans include: Health Professional Student Loans, and Loans for Disadvantaged Student Programs. These scholarships include any that are awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the category Scholarships for Individuals with Exceptional Financial Need. Application Procedure

Prospective trainees should complete the on-line application form.

  • Program application

  • Statement of purpose, describing rationale for applying to the program, long-term professional goals, and specific research interests. Statement should be no more than 1,250 words (approximately 2 single-spaced Word pages) in 12 point Times New Roman font.

  • Curriculum vitae/resume

 

To be submitted electronically (preferred) or via post mail

  • Transcript from college(s) attended (official or unofficial) 

  • Two letters of recommendation (recommendation form)

    • From two faculty members who can speak about your aptitude and experience. Letters from faculty who carry out research in the sciences is preferable.

Please submit your transcript and letters of recommendation only after you have filled-up the on-line application form. We recommend that you use the checklist in preparing your application materials.

Submit all paper transcript and letters of recommendation in one envelope to Marelle Berry, Program Assistant.

 

Selection Process

Applicants with the greatest research potential and the best match for the available research training will be selected for a phone interview, where applicants’ motivation to carry out research and Spanish language skills will be assessed.  Questions that arise from the application will also be addressed.

Applicant selection decisions will be finalized by March 2018. For more information regarding selection, please see the program non-acceptance letter.

Please note, if selected we will be sending an annual 1-2 questionnaire asking about the status of your academic career.
