The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate <x{(}>(NDSEG) Fellowship is highly competitive. Since its inception in 1989, NDSEG has awarded nearly 3,500 fellowships from over 58,000 applications to U.S. citizens and nationals who pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines at a U.S. institution of their choosing. NDSEG Fellowships last for a period of up to four years <x{(}>(based on continued funding), and covers full tuition and mandatory fees. Fellows also receive a monthly stipend, and up to $1,500 a year in medical insurance. The NDSEG Fellowship is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research <x{(}>(AFOSR), the Army Research Office <x{(}>(ARO), and the Office of Naval Research <x{(}>(ONR) under the direction of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense <x{(}>(OSD) for Research and Engineering.



APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

A complete application consist of the following:

  • Completion of the Application Form to include <x{(}>(contact information, education experience, work experience, certificates, licenses, references, personal statement, proposed research in relevance to DOD, etc.). The research title should be entered into the database, but the actual project description should be uploaded. An upload button is included in the application. Additionally, applicants can return to the application to make additional changes until the application closes by visiting the Application page of the website and logging in as a returning user.

Please submit a proposal relevant to the DoD Agency <x{(}>(AIRFORCE, ARMY, ONR)/field that interest you. The reader should be convinced that your project will make an important contribution to the Agency and be a persuasive argument for why your project/proposed training deserves to be funded. Pictures, graphs, diagrams charts are acceptable <x{(}>(smaller text to identify these objects are allowable).
  • Copies of official transcripts <x{(}>(Transcripts needed for all Secondary Institutions Attended)

ELIGIBILITY
Bachelor’s degree – through the second year of a traditional PhD program.

CITIZENSHIP

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. The term "nationals" refers to native residents of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship. Persons who hold permanent resident status are not eligible. Proof of citizenship will be required upon formal offer.

Your field of study must fit under one of the fifteen supported disciplines:

  • Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
  • Biosciences <x{(}>(includes toxicology)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Civil Engineering
  • Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
  • Computer and Computational Sciences
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geosciences <x{(}>(includes terrain, water, and air)
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering <x{(}>(includes undersea systems)
  • Oceanography <x{(}>(includes ocean acoustics, remote sensing, and marine meteorology)
  • Physics <x{(}>(including optics)

As long as your area of interest is reasonably considered to be in one or more of these fields, you should be eligible to apply in terms of discipline. If you need help selecting one of our supported disciplines, we recommend utilizing your academic or research advisor for guidance.

ACADEMIC STATUS

NDSEG Fellowships are designed to encourage baccalaureate recipients to enter graduate school and ultimately gain doctorates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math <x{(}>(STEM) fields. Applicants must have received or be on track to receive their bachelor's degrees by Summer 2018.

STI-TEC and the DoD use academic status guidelines to ensure that students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies receive fellowships. To be eligible, applicants must either: be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies, or have completed no more than two years of full-time years graduate study in the discipline in which they are applying.

Applicants who have received a medical degree or Ph.D. in science or engineering are not eligible for the NDSEG fellowship.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTENCE OF THE FELLOWSHIP 

Applicants must intend to pursue a doctoral degree in order to be eligible for NDSEG Fellowship support. if awarded, applicants must start in the fall of that year. Fellowships awarded in the spring of 2018 must start in September 2018. Deferrals may be considered on a case by case basis, and must be authorized by NDSEG prior to acceptance. In most cases an NDSEG Fellowship is non-deferrable.

NDSEG Fellows must be enrolled full-time and must be pursuing graduate study at a U.S. institution; the NDSEG Fellowship does not pay for tuition at any non-U.S. institution.

A fellow may not accept simultaneous remuneration from another major fellowship. Fellows must be eligible to accept both the tuition benefit and the full stipend amount.


EVALUATION AND SELECTION:

NDSEG Fellowships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

Proposed research relevant to the DoD. The research proposal should capture the following:

    1. The proposed potential for the research
      1. Advance knowledge across disciplines and/or potential to advance the field <x{(}>(intellectual Merit)
      2. Potential benefit to society <x{(}>(Broader Impact)
    2. Does the proposed research explore creative, original or potentially transformative concepts?
    3. Does the plan for carrying out the proposed research sound rationale; is it well organized, based on logic?
    4. Does the plan incorporate a mechanism to assess success?
    5. How well qualified is the individual to conduct the proposed research?
    6. Resources necessary to accomplish the proposed research?

Academic Achievement. This is based on your academic transcript, Major GPA, and GREs.

Reference Evaluation Forms. These forms should capture professional assessment of the applicant, a testimony to your scholarly excellence. References should be provided by an Advisor or Instructor.

Personal Statement. Describe your academic or other interest, and personal achievements.
