NHMA Internship Program

The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) is a non-profit organization that represents more than 50,000 members across the country. We are the leader in Hispanic Health issues who works with a diverse array of partners. Our partners throughout the county, include representatives from government, foundations, and industry. NHMA is looking for fall interns to fill the positions below.

Non-Profit Health Care/Health Policy Internship. The National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) provides an outstanding opportunity for students interested in a semester internship about nonprofit associations in the healthcare, public health prevention, as well as national advocacy and policy analysis fields. NHMA focuses on improving the health of Hispanic populations and works closely with its members and partners – physicians, health professionals, residents, and medical students as well as the Federal government, Congress, and private sector partners which impact the health of our communities.

Programs Internship. NHMA has various opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, including programming. Current programs are focused on HIV, the All of Us programs, Opioids, and the NHMA College Health Scholars Program. The Programs Intern position gives a student the opportunity to assist and learn about program management by working on the NHMA College Health Scholars Program.

Communications Internship. The National Hispanic Medical Association coordinates social media-based health communications campaigns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on HIV Awareness as well as monthly and weekly NHMA Membership and Network communications. NHMA also focuses its marketing flyers and social media ads and messages on its spring Annual Conference, fall Region Forums, and winter Scholarship Galas. NHMA sends out monthly eNewsletters, Weekly Announcements on Constant Contact, coordinates Twitter chats and Webinars as well as manages 2 websites and a portal (HispanicHealth.info). NHMA monitors and reports on all campaigns.

Accounting Internship. The National Hispanic Medical Association is looking for an accounting intern who is committed to gaining experiences in budgeting, accounting, and auditing.
Tasks include processing payments and documents such as invoices, journal vouchers, employee reimbursements, and statements. In addition, you will:

  • Verify items billed against items ordered and received and reconcile differences through follow-up with the vendor and/or other employees.
  • Enter, update, and/or retrieve accounting data from automated systems.
  • Post financial data to appropriate accounts in an automated accounting system, according to instructions.
  • Review on-line transactions for changes and accuracy and corrects errors.
  • Retrieve system reports. Assigns codes to data. Endorse checks or money orders, prepare account deposit ticket, and deposits money as directed.
  • File and/or remove records and reports. Operates standard office equipment. Performs related work as assigned.
  • Must be proficient in QuickBooks and Excel.
  • Must be detail oriented.

Event Management and Meeting Planning. The National Hispanic Medical Association hosts an Annual Conference on Health, Congressional Briefings, and Networking Receptions throughout the year, and leadership and mentorship programs. Its foundation, the National Hispanic Health Foundation, also hosts two scholarship dinners in the winter in New York and California. All interns are expected to assist with registration, program planning, event, and venue logistics, designing communication pieces, updating databases, following up with speakers and sponsors, and managing the organization’s checklist for events. NHMA’s biggest program is its Annual Conference as it involves an all year round planning. All interns are expected to assist in tasks that the NHMA and NHHF may require.

Qualifications: Interest in health and/or event/meeting planning. Strong research skills coupled with good multitasking skills. Ability to get along with others and work in a fast paced office. Proficient in Microsoft Office and a plus if knows photoshop and social media. Good communication skills. Good phone/email etiquette. Office work experience a plus.
