Differential Diagnosis of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika 

Research Project Description 

A fellowship opportunity is available with the Surveillance and Research Laboratory of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Vector Borne Diseases, Dengue Branch in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The fellow will conduct research on the early diagnosis of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Work in the host laboratory includes molecular and immunodiagnostic research and development, which has the potential to impact current public health policy. Our research is focused on the development or improvement of diagnostic tests and evaluation of current diagnostic test options. 

The fellow will gain experience by: 

Co-designing and implementing research studies 

Helping efforts in innovative research to improve diagnosis of dengue and other arboviral diseases. 

Preparing scientific articles and reports for publication and conference presentation 

Participating in CDC research activities and special investigations 

Co-presenting results and findings to other scientists and public health researchers within and outside CDC 

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) institute that focuses on scientific initiatives to research health risks and educate the next generation of scientists. The program benefits CDC by strengthening its research and development enterprise through education and research participation programs by providing CDC with the recruitment of skilled, knowledgeable individuals whose expertise has historically resulted in the successful completion of critical projects for the CDC. 

The participant will receive a monthly stipend (including medical coverage) commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the San Juan, Puerto Rico area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid. 

Qualifications: 

• Applicants must have a PhD degree in biomedical sciences (virology, immunology or related field preferred) within five years of the start date of the appointment, or expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship. 

• Candidates with demonstrated expertise in the following skills are desired: antibody purification, conjugation, immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and ELISA assays; maintenance and troubleshooting of hybdridoma cell lines; expression and purification of target proteins in different systems; antibody development and characterization. Previous knowledge in immunodiagnostic test development is desired, but not essential. 

• Applicants must have strong written and oral communication skills in English. 

• Fellows should have excellent writing skills, a demonstrated record of writing/publishing, and be able to be involved with minimal supervision. 

• Ability to effectively collaborate in interdisciplinary and multicultural settings is expected. Knowledge of Spanish is recommended.
