Tell Congress to Continue Funding For Stem Cell Research! A recent Federal District Court ruling has halted the use of federal funds for human embryonic stem cell research (hESC). As a result, NIH ordered an immediate shutdown of intramural hESC research. Extramural research for which funds have already been awarded will continue, but NIH will not review or award any new grants, competing renewals, or continuations involving hESCs. The federal government has appealed the court’s decision. Congress must also take action to ensure that federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research will continue while the legal case is being appealed. It is important that members of Congress hear from the scientific community that prohibiting the use of federal funds for hESC research is a major set-back for the potential development of new medical treatments. Please let your members of Congress know that hESC research has already provided important insight into diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, giving hope to patients suffering from these devastating illnesses. Use the form below to ensure that NIH can continue to fund life saving research! Sample Message: Dear Representative (edit or add your own text - 8775 characters left) I am writing to urge you to take action to ensure that federal funding for embryonic stem cell research will continue! A recent legal case has brought an abrupt halt to nearly all of the existing human embryonic stem cell studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the agency will not award any new grants for this type of research. I ask that you please pass the necessary legislation to enable federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. Prohibiting the use of federal funds for human embryonic stem cell research is a major set-back to research that holds promise for future cures and unnecessarily delays development of new medical treatments, diminishing the hopes of millions of patients suffering from serious illnesses. Existing NIH procedures ensure that federally funded embryonic stem cell research is conducted under rigorous ethical guidelines. In closing, I respectfully request that you enable federal funding for human embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cells are the gold standard of stem cell research. Please continue hope for millions of Americans who are suffering from devastating illnesses and untreatable diseases. Sincerely,
