Deadline:

A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez (UPRM) to work in the area of active matter and colloidal hydrodynamics.

The postdoctoral scholar will study, at a fundamental level, self-propulsion of catalytically driven colloidal particles. This work will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Ubaldo M. Córdova-Figueroa from the Department of Chemical Engineering at UPRM and collaborators.

By making active materials to be self-powered, they will also be capable of exploring and responding to their environment (sensor and cargo-release applications) without being tethered to a single power source or location. Successful applicants will be responsible for deriving models and performing simulations, as well as proposing new experiments in this field.

We are seeking candidates who are highly motivated and career-oriented. The candidate is expected to have a PhD in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline. The candidate is required to be exceptional in fluid mechanics, mathematics and computer programming. The candidate will also be required to write proposals, manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and make technical presentations at national and international conferences.

Salary, benefits and visa sponsorship: The initial appointment will be for a period of 12 months, renewal will be granted at this period based on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. The salary is approximately $40,000 per year plus additional fringe benefits. UPRM will sponsor a visa for non-US citizens/permanent residents if they are found to be eligible candidates.

The position is available starting in Fall 2014. Applicants should send a brief statement of research interest, curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Ubaldo M. Córdova-Figueroa at ubaldom.cordova@upr.edu no later than August 15, 2014. Please use "Theory postdoc application" as email subject.
