Pre- and post-doctoral fellowships in statistical genetics/genetic epidemiology

This program, funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, provides predoctoral and postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University to produce future independent investigators with multidisciplinary experiences that span several basic mission areas of the NHLBI (sleep and hypoxic response, cardiopulmonary and cardio-renal diseases, hypertension, and inflammation/infection), but is rooted in rigorous biostatistical, epidemiologic, genetic/genomic and computational approaches to problem solving.

Predoctoral training is for the Ph.D. degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics with a concentration in Genetic Epidemiology and Bioinformatics (http://epbiwww.case.edu/index.php/academics/phd-program/93-geab), with the trainees gaining general expertise in population sciences, particularly in solving problems related to “omics” in large samples through the development of innovative modeling strategies.  Trainees receive sound training in statistical genetics as well as exposure to collaborations with the broader Case Community in other departments and Centers of Excellence that have relevant clinical and basic science expertise.

Postdoctoral applicants will follow a 1-3 year program of research and study geared to their particular interests; preference will be given to postdoctoral applicants who have an MD degree. All trainees, both pre-and post-doctoral, attend regularly scheduled seminars and specific lectures and/or reading courses, including mandatory lectures in bioethics.  Particular features of the program are:  computational laboratory cross-training, short-term training stints in basic science laboratories, interaction with the Medical Scientist Training Program, and the presence of internationally known biostatisticians/geneticists/ genetic epidemiologists as visitors, for periods of one to several days, giving seminars in their particular fields of specialty.

Applicants are expected to have had elementary calculus and biology/genetics/biochemistry, and an interest in developing an academic career in topics relevant to the NHLBI mission.  All applicants must be citizens of the United States or non-citizen nationals, or must have been lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence.

For application to the PhD program, see http://epbiwww.case.edu/index.php/apply

For post-doctoral training, email a relevant faculty member (see http://epbiwww.case.edu/index.php/people/faculty) your CV and at least two references.
