We are excited to let you know that we will run the sixth “Sampling Advanced Mathematics for Minority Students” (SAMMS) at The Ohio State University during the four week period

July 11th – August 5th, 2016

and hope you will consider applying. SAMMS is a collaborative program between The Ohio State University and the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. It is designed for college students from traditionally underrepresented minorities who are considering graduate studies in STEM fields, particularly, in mathematics related disciplines. The SAMMS 2016 curriculum will include the following:

Mini-courses are offered in Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Topology, Combinatorics & Probability, as well as Computational Science. Classes for each course will meet daily and introduce students to graduate level studies in these subjects via carefully selected sample topics. Instruction and curriculum are adaptable to individual student needs and interests.

Further academic activities include the Inquiry Activity in which participants connect to Ohio State research faculty as part of exploratory projects, as well as a Graduate School Orientation that introduces students to graduate careers and applications process, including GRE practice and document preparations.

Participants come together in common recitation sessions, activities around campus, as well as organized week-end trips to popular Ohio destinations.

For more information about the program and in order to apply please visit the web page at

http://samms.osu.edu

Travel, lodging, and meals will be covered by SAMMS for invited participants. We will begin screening applications at the end of March or early April and continue to invite qualified applicants until slots are filled. Priority will be given to students from underrepresented minorities who are currently in their undergraduate sophomore and junior years and who have an adequate background in calculus and linear algebra. Other groups of students will be considered depending on availabilities and circumstances.
