Project Description:

A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Office of the Director, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Public health policies can affect the nutrition environment and influence lifestyle choices and behavior. Conducting policy research is a critical component of a public health response. Policy research results are used to educate the public, engage partners, and inform policy makers of initiatives that have reach and impact to improve dietary quality, increase physical activity, and reduce or prevent obesity.

This project will provide experience in researching, analyzing and monitoring federal and state policy related to nutrition, physical activity, and obesity in settings that include communities, workplaces, healthcare facilities, childcare institutions, etc. The research participant will be involved with staff within the division to support policy and partnership efforts including those related to the maintenance of an interactive database, analysis of legislative data, dissemination of policy findings, and the development and engagement of new partnerships.

Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities may include:

  • Supporting the implementation of the division health policy action plan.
  • Maintaining and updating a web based portal that displays state policy data.
  • Conducting an analysis of policy and preparing written materials for the public related to this analysis.
  • Developing translation products for partners.
  • Helping identify and address partnership needs of the DNPAO funded state program.
  • Assisting in the coordination of relevant activities related to the DNPAO health equity working group.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
