The Yale Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) is a NIH-funded internship program for recent bachelor’s degree recipients to gain the research skills and academic credentials to become competitive applicants to, and successful students in, highly selective doctoral programs.  PREP students conduct independent laboratory research under supervision of a faculty mentor, who is selected from among 350 faculty members in the Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) at Yale.  PREP students also take Yale courses and participate in program-specific seminars and workshops as well as institutional training activities with beginning graduate students in the BBS.  All PREP students are expected to apply to PhD programs for admission to begin graduate study following successful completion of the internship.

PROGRAM:

Yale PREP is a one-year program that runs from June 1 to May 31.

PREP students spend 75% of their time conducting independent research under supervision of a faculty mentor.  The remainder of their time is devoted to an educational curriculum composed of the following:

Summer:
GRE Preparation course
Graduate Workshop I
Research Literature Seminar

Fall semester:
Yale course
Graduate Workshop II
Research Presentations (Research-in-Progress)

Spring semester:
Yale course
Career Workshop
Journal Club
Research Presentations (PREP Symposium)

PREP participants receive a stipend of $27,200 for the twelve-month period beginning June 1 for living expenses. PREP participants also receive financial support that covers tuition for one course per semester during the academic year, health insurance, a GRE Preparation course administered by Kaplan Review, purchase of a laptop computer, and travel-related expenses to attend one national conference.

Participants reside in Yale campus housing for the duration of the program. Some dormitories have a mandatory meal plan. Participants will be expected to use a portion of their stipend to cover housing, the mandatory meal plan if applicable, and other living expenses.

FACULTY:

PREP students can choose their faculty mentors from among 350 faculty members in the Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS). The research of BBS faculty spans a wide range of topics and experimental approaches. Please go to the BBS website for information about the BBS faculty and their research.

ELIGIBILITY:

Yale PREP is intended for students with a strong desire to pursue biomedical research careers at the Ph.D. level. We are particularly interested in motivated and talented students from traditionally underrepresented groups in the biomedical sciences and a diversity of backgrounds.

To participate in Yale PREP:

  • You must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • You received your bachelor’s degree in a biomedically relevant science prior to the start of the program but no more than 3 years prior to applying to the program.
  • You are not concurrently enrolled in a degree program.
  • You must apply to PhD programs in the biomedical sciences for admission following successful completion of the program.

APPLICATION:

The application deadline is February 1.

The application includes a personal statement, 3 letters of recommendation, and an undergraduate transcript.

The application can be found here.

Applicants selected for admission will be notified directly no later than April 1.
