SfN’s Ricardo Miledi Neuroscience Training Program is seeking applications from neuroscience students and young investigators from Latin America and the Caribbean. This hands-on training includes modules on neurophysiology, neurogenesis, CNS pathologies, and neural systems and behavior. Successful applicants receive travel and living expenses for the course as well as a travel fellowship to attend the 2011 SfN annual meeting. The deadline for the 2011 program is December 20, 2010. To apply and for more information see here: http://www.sfn.org/index.aspx?pagename=FellowshipAndAwards_rmntp Details about the Program: • Date: March 14 - April 9, 2011 • Location: Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable” - MEC, Facultad de Medicina and Facultad de Ciencias - UdelaR Montevideo, Uruguay • Course Directors: Dr. Omar Macadar, Department of Neurophysiology, Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable,” and Dr. Federico Dajas, Department of Neurochemistry, Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable” • Topics: Neurophysiology, neurogenesis, CNS pathologies, and neural systems The general structure of the course will involve a daily morning lecture followed by the introduction of the day’s practical exercise by the instructor or discussion of the results of the previous day by the students. The course has been divided in four modules: cellular neurophysiology, development and neurogenesis, CNS pathologies, and neural systems and behavior. Students will be divided into small groups and, on any given day, a member of each group will present and discuss the results of his or her group. All students will be required to present and discuss the results of their groups. The course will provide practical instruction in key methodologies to allow students sufficient time to practice each methodology. Demonstrations will be kept to a minimum and will be used only in those cases in which the length of the procedures or waiting times between the different steps involved preclude their incorporation into the practical course. A great effort will be made to allow the students to try out most of the experimental procedures to be covered in the course. Additionally, each student will be required to make a presentation in English of the research work they are engaged in at their home laboratories. These presentations will be distributed throughout the four weeks of the course.
