The Leadership Alliance, an academic consortium of 32 institutions of higher learning including leading research and teaching college and universities, aims to develop underrepresented students into outstanding leaders and role models in academia, business and the public sector. The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), principally for underserved and underrepresented students, offers undergraduates the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to participate in the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national symposium and to make oral or poster presentations of their research. Students receive a stipend, travel and housing. Participating Institutions: Brown University Columbia University Cornell University Cornell University (Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences) Cornell University (Cornell /Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program) Dartmouth College Harvard University Howard University Hunter College Johns Hopkins University Montana State University New York University New York University (Sackler Institute of Biomedical Sciences) Princeton University Stanford University Tufts University University of Colorado at Boulder University of Maryland, Baltimore County University of Miami University of Pennsylvania Vanderbilt University Yale University Through their SR-EIP application, you can apply to up to three programs at the same time. For more information, visit their website: www.theleadershipalliance.org and look under Summer Research Programs. Twenty-one of the Leadership Alliance’s institutional members and one corporate partner offer summer research programs that include active participation in scholarly research projects. These programs also offer weekly seminars and regularly scheduled field trips, as well as social and cultural activities. The institutions set high standards and offer outstanding, closely mentored research experiences in the areas that are indicated in the "Research Fields" section of the application form. Interested students should review these research areas carefully and make selections that best match their own interests and experience with the institutions’ programs. Students should also check each institution’s website at View Research Sites for specific information on research opportunities and program requirements, before submitting the application form. Students who have already participated as a Leadership Alliance SR-EIP student may apply for an internship with Eli Lilly and Company.
