The Alzheimer's Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. We are the largest private funder of Alzheimer research and the premier source of information and support for the more than 5 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and their 11 million families and caregivers. To enhance and strengthen this work, the organization seeks to add an additional Associate Director, Federal Affairs position, to assist Federal public policy efforts. This person will be responsible to lobby the Federal government and assist in government affairs efforts. This person will develop and implement federal legislative and regulatory policies, and monitor developments in federal affairs for the Association's Public Policy division based in Washington, DC. The Associate Director will report to the division's Managing Director, Federal Affairs, also based in the Washington office. We seek an individual with experience working with members of Congress, their staffs and other key policymakers. The preferred candidate will have direct lobbying experience and substantive expertise in health care issues, including Medicare and health care reform. The successful candidate must be a strong team player and enjoy working in a collegial yet highly demanding and effective culture. Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, execute strategy, and operate with confidentiality will also be required as are excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Associate Director of Federal Affairs is responsible for: • Engaging in lobbying and public policy activities: • Working with members of Congress and their staffs on the Association's federal legislative priorities; • Working with relevant federal agencies on the Association's federal regulatory priorities; • Developing federal legislative and regulatory policies for the Association: • Working on the creation or modification of federal policy positions; and • Drafting legislative initiatives as well as supporting statements and documentation. • Monitoring developments in the federal affairs environment: • Discovering, analyzing, and reporting federal government related developments that could materially affect efforts by the Alzheimer's Association and/or its affiliated chapter network to accomplish shared strategic objectives; and • Making recommendations on and developing responses to emerging federal legislative and regulatory issues. • Representing the Association in relevant federal affairs coalitions and representing the Department in internal Association meetings, as requested by the Managing Director of Federal Affairs: • Supporting the Department of Advocacy in executing grassroots actions by chapter staff and volunteers in support of federal affairs objectives; • Preparing materials to equip both chapter staff and volunteers to advocate effectively in support of federal affairs objectives; and • Developing ideas and content for electronic messages and updates on federal policy for chapters and grassroots advocates. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor's Degree required. • Five years in federal government or equivalent experience • Strong written and oral communications skills.
