Governance Center Director

World Resources Institute Washington, DC

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks an exceptional leader to direct its Governance Center. WRI is a global research organization that spans more than 50 countries, with offices in the United States, China, India, Brazil, and more. Its 450 experts and staff work closely with leaders to turn big ideas into action to sustain a healthy environment – the foundation of economic opportunity and human well-being. The Governance Center works with networks of analysts and advocates around the world to empower people and support institutions to foster environmentally sound and socially equitable decision-making.

WRI focuses on six urgent global challenges: Forests, Food, Water, Climate, Energy, and Cities & Transport. The Governance Director will play a central role in delivering impact across these six areas. He/she will build and direct a multi-national, multi-disciplinary team to advance fair and effective governance principles in order to alleviate poverty and improve quality of life. WRI’s Governance Center partners with NGOs, governments and businesses to: promote systemic improvements in access to information, public participation, and justice; build and strengthen the capacity of critical institutions; and strengthen land and natural resource property rights. Operating on an annual budget of approximately $7 million, the Governance Center’s current staff of 20 promotes greater transparency, inclusiveness, representativeness and accountability in decisions regarding natural resources and the environment. Importantly, the Director will also provide oversight and guidance to a broader group of staff working on governance issues across the Institute.

The Governance Director will provide strategic and intellectual leadership to Governance Center initiatives by leading fundraising, Center-level strategy development and implementation, and human resource and budget management. The Director will be expected to grow the size and influence of the Center by building upon existing projects and strategies and leading the development of new areas of governance work. The Director will also promote work on governance concerns that cut across and strengthen the effectiveness of WRI’s other programs on Climate, Energy, Food, Forests, Water, Cities and Transport, Business and Finance.

This is an exceptional, exciting opportunity for a highly talented and inspirational leader, who is an expert and thought-leader on governance principles and democracy reform issues in general and in the application of these governance goals in the environmental and natural resources arenas. The Director will be a recognized expert among government and foundation funders that support governance reform with a demonstrated track record of high quality project design and implementation, policy research and publication, and of influencing policy-making at the national and international levels. The successful candidate will have superior communication skills, a global network of collaborators and contacts, and a record of achievement in strategic leadership, financial and human resource management, and fund-raising.
