IUPAC 2011 Organizing Committee of the Colegio de Químicos de PR in conjunction with the Puerto Rico Science, Technology, Research Trust (PRSTRT) announce the addition of two exciting award programs targeted to encourage young chemist’s and scientists in allied fields of chemical sciences to participate at the 43rd IUPAC Congress in Puerto Rico. One of the programs target the local young scientists while the other focuses in PR scientists from abroad. The 43rd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress and 70th PR Chemistry Conference and Exhibition organized by the Colegio de Químicos de Puerto Rico will be held from July 31 to August 5, 2011 at San Juan, Puerto Rico. The theme of the Congress is "Chemistry Bridging Innovation among the Americas and the World". IUPAC 2011 will provide the appropriate forum to foster the bridging of innovation in Chemistry and related fields among the Americas and the rest of the World. Moreover, the event will be a major cornerstone of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry and a unique opportunity to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. For more information about the Congress visit the website: www.iupac2011.org. The 2011 IUPAC Congress sessions and exhibitions platform will offer a distinctive opportunity to Puerto Rico for prominence and visibility worldwide (before, during and after) for being part of this historical event supporting the largest knowledge convergence forum held in this region of the Americas. The aim of the Technology Trust, through this sponsorship, allows for the promotion of PR’s life science ecosystem, the commitment towards showcasing the support of R&D infrastructure, the knowledge exchange, the involvement with the education community, the policies and incentives for attracting scientists as well as innovative companies to do business here in the future science district. Particularly, we need to continue to brand PR bioscience and innovation ecosystem led by presence of the world’s most prestigious biotech companies and their efforts for opting to cluster their research and development efforts here, at the crossroads of the Americas and the Caribbean. The two award programs are as follows: • Program A is especially targeted at young chemists, allied scientists and engineers from PR. Awards offer full congress registration. • Program B is open to PR chemists & allied scientists and engineers from abroad. Awards offer full congress registration and travel assistance to PR with a limit of up to $1,500. • In both programs, we would like to invite principally investigators and post docs from academia plus centers / institutes of research & innovation, government labs or small business research based enterprises. Applications are welcomed from candidates under age 40 who received their Ph.D. less than five years ago. Scientists from academia, government, or private sector (small business) may submit applications directly to the address below. Successful applicants will be expected to submit an oral or poster presentation abstract to be presented at the Congress. Such abstracts will be subject to adjudication as will all other submissions for presentation at the meeting. Moreover, a one day activity (colloquium or symposium) is being organized as part of the Congress program, in the area of life science entrepreneurship. The objective of the one day activity is to bring local and visiting scientists that may already be entrepreneurs to interact and offer advice to those scientists that may need mentoring with the commercialization of their research. The symposium will be finalized with a reception principally for networking purposes, for the mentors and those attendees in need for mentoring. Attendance to this one day activity is required from those receiving the awards. The activity will be open to all registered participants in IUPAC 2011. Applicants are asked to submit the following information: • letter of application (One Page) • brief CV including a list of publications (5–10 top) • confirmation of their current status and affiliation (can be included in the letter from the department head or dean); • the abstract submitted (if not one to be submitted for the poster session) the IUPAC 2011 Congress • letter of support or recommendation from the appropriate department head, dean, or laboratory supervisor. For the PR scientists abroad, the letter could also come from the organization in PR associated with or from which an alumni connection exists. • Candidates from abroad, should provide an estimate of economy airfare to and from the Congress. Applicants are not required to be a member of the PR Chemists Association, or the ACS (or affiliate of IUPAC) to be eligible for a Young Scientist awards. The deadline for receipt of applications is June 15th. For more information or for sending the applications, please send to those annotated below and with IUPAC Young Chemists/Scientists Award in the subject line of the e-mail message: • Prof. Gabriel A. Infante, Ph.D. (Chairman of the IUPAC 2011 Organizing Committee) [gainfante@hotmail.com] • Carlos A. Tollinche, Ph.D. (Vice Chairman of the IUPAC 2011 Organizing Committee) [catollm@gmail.com] • Prof. Nestor Carballeira, Ph.D. (Co-Chair Scientific Program) [carballeira@onelinkpr.net / nmcarballeira@uprrp.edu] We want the PR Young Scientists in the chemical sciences and allied disciplines to be part of this great event. The value proposition for PR from securing this biennial World Chemistry Congress is summarized by the strategies presented below. • This high level scientific congress will showcase the research platform & commitment of PR towards promoting the Science, Technology and Innovation as engine for growth in the knowledge economy – Provide visibility to PR as a leading industrial hub and ecosystem in life science sectors. – Science & Technology and Innovation Policy • About 2,000 – 2,500 persons will converge in PR from around the world during the 6-day Congress which will promote plus strengthen the collaboration, networking and exchange of knowledge among scientists and in particular our scientists with those visiting PR for the event. • The Scientific Program includes plenary lectures by seven confirmed Nobel Laureates in Chemistry. • Great exposure for the Trust infrastructure: Molecular Science Complex, BDTC, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Science District initiatives among others to be promoted among the visiting scientists • Strengthen the S&T Ecosystem in particular: ** Pipeline of the future professionals (particularly Puerto Ricans scientists local and abroad) ** Promote more R&D activity (pure and applied) ** Potential entrepreneurial activities among scientists will be promoted ** Provide visibility for the PR incentive acts available for businesses & scientists to commercialize their Research
