From Old Penitentiary to World-Class Scientific Center

Until a few days ago, between the walls of Oso Blanco lived the most dangerous convicts in Puerto Rico. On October 22nd started the process that –according to the Government’s expectations- will turn the Old Penitentiary into the most important scientific research center in the Island. For this the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation transferred to the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, 70 acres of land, where the Old Penitentiary resides, and it’s valued in almost $150 million. This land together with the Knowledge Corridor will include: The new home of the Department of Education The new Molecular Biosciences building and the UPR Botanical Garden Improvements to the hospitals in the Medical Center The new Cancer Center

The click beetle Pyrophorus luminosus is native of Puerto Rico and is often mistaken to be a firefly, because both species emit light from the rear end of their bodies. To the contrary of fireflies, the click beetle also emits light from its head, around the “shoulders”, given the impression of having to lights that don’t sparkle, but shine.

Biotechnology company inaugurates in Cayey

The medical technology company, BD (Becton, Dickinson & Company) Biosciences inaugurated the first phase of its expansion of its plant in Cayey, at a cost of $42 million. The facilities, 40,000 square feet in the first phase, will be used to manufacture monoclonal antibodies. BD hopes to complete the expansion of its bioscience plant by mid-2009, which will consist of two new buildings in front of the existing one and the creation of 70 to 100 jobs.

The announcement of the GlaxoSmithKline closure is a fatal blow, to the economy and the municipality of Cidra, which could cause the firing of city employees in 2008. “That added to Ivax, which is between a rock and a hard place; and Millipore, which is basically closed, Glaxo is a mortal blow that translates into a $2 million shortage for the municipality of Cidra”, said mayor Ángel L. Malavé.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) fired 360 of its 900 employees of its Cidra plant, confirmed Ervin Rodríguez, the plant’s Human Resources director. The plant is going through a phased shutdown, so there will be more dismissals at the end of the year.
