Authorities identify source of petroleum spill

The Coast Guard identified the tanker Genmar Progress as the possible responsible for the petroleum spill that affected Puerto Rico’s southwest coast this past August, General Maritime Corporation provides petroleum transportation services and operated in the Caribbean, Central America, South America, the United States, western Africa and the Mediterranean.

Cancer Center would help avoid brain drain

The new facilities of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Puerto Rico will be a niche for medical students and researchers, many of whom are obliged to leave the Island in search of better job opportunities. The Center will include research laboratories, prevention and treatment services for cancer. The laboratories should be ready by September or October 2008. The Center is a public corporation, associated to institutions like MD Anderson. The Center’s main building, under construction at the old State Penitentiary, should be ready for 2012.
