FDA to close its laboratory in Puerto Rico

The laboratory of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Puerto Rico could close operations in October, confirmed Douglas Arbesfeld, spokesman for the agency in the United States. However, he said that the regional office will continue operating. The FDA laboratory processes samples of pharmacy drugs. Arbesfeld assured that they will continue inspections in the Island and that samples will be sent by mail to other laboratories. This closing is parte of an agency reorganization.

Aerospace industry growing in Puerto Rico

Two companies from the aerospace industry established operations in the Island, creating more than a 100 jobs. Florida Turbines, established in Cabo Rojo, does research and development for the aerospace industry, specifically with turbines. On the other hand, Essig Research, now in Mayaguez, does computational analysis of fluid, heat transfer and design analysis, and lifespan and stress on turbine systems.

The Senate held a forum to Exchange ideas to promote environmental legislation, and a group of academics, entrepreneurs, mayors and agency directors urged the legislature to create public policies on energy, to solve the solid waste problems and oil dependence.

The Puerto Rican spindalis is one of the most eye-catching birds in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, possessing a beautiful combination of colors that include olive green, orange and a few brushstrokes of black and white. This species, very common in the Island, is a fruit eater, although it complements its diet with some insects. Its favorite food includes figs, berries, and passion fruit, among others. Given its high fruit consumption, the Puerto Rican spindalis is an excellent seed disperser.

Iguaca is the name for the new home of the Puerto Rican parrot

The new home for the Puerto Rican parrot has a name: Iguaca. This is the name that our Taino Indians used for this endangered bird. The Fishing and Wild Life Service held a contest so the public could choose a name for the new bird house in Rio Grande, and the name Iguaca won by receiving 50% of the 1,950 votes.
