Stories of community leaders in Puerto Rico
We highlight leaders who serve diverse communities in different regions of the archipelago, including public housing residents, seniors, people with functional diversity, and the Deaf Community, among others.
Ciencia y solidaridad: Celebrating the Stories of Community Leaders in Puerto Rico
Thanks to the support of the Puerto Rican Humanities Foundation, we held an event to highlight the many ways science is part of culture, how science is practiced in everyday Puerto Rican life, and how science and local knowledge come together through community self-management.
Members of the Urbanización Villa del Carmen community in Ponce hosted this event, co-created by CienciaPR and the Junta Innovadora Comunal Villa del Carmen.
Stories that inspire
Leaders who were part of the book share their experience
"It was a big surprise. I didn't expect to be featured in a book. The daily and intense service to the community I love and to those who visit us, I know that with the passing of decades, it will be forgotten. However, the fact that a portion of that work is in a book, I know that a little bit will be remembered with the sole objective of motivating more people to do as much as they can for the collective well-being. Life is very short, and we must do as much good as possible."

Community Leader - Science and Solidarity
"Being part of the book Science and Solidarity means to me defending a science that communicates accessibly and recognizes sign language as a fundamental right of the deaf community. This project reaffirms my commitment to building knowledge from inclusion, empathy, and solidarity."

Community Leader - Science and Solidarity
"The enormous gift that Ciencia Puerto Rico has given me by including me in their book Science and Solidarity rekindles in me the feeling of solidarity with my community, because solidarity is not just talk: it is action, it is empathy, it is science, it is love. It validates the importance of community work, accessibility, and service as the foundation of Puerto Rico's social development. I receive it with humility, gratitude, and the commitment to continue contributing to the deaf community and the country."
