From September 25 to 26, 2026, the Puerto Rico Convention Center will host the Caribbean Health & AI Congress Expo (CHAIC 2026), the first congress in the Caribbean dedicated exclusively to artificial intelligence applied to health. Around 500 medical, technology, and public policy professionals are expected to attend, from Puerto Rico, the United States, and Latin America.
CHAIC 2026 is organized by Advance Medical Research Center LLC (AMRC) under the leadership of Dr. Orvil Martinez, physician, entrepreneur, and founder of the congress, in partnership with institutions such as the Sociedad de Médicos Emprendedores (SoPE), HIMSS Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico and Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Puerto Rico AI Institute and Consortium, AIMed, and the University of Puerto Rico, among others.
The program includes representatives from Google (MedGemma project), OpenEvidence, the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Nabla, and Dr. Anthony Chang, founder of the ABAIM (Artificial Intelligence in Medicine) certification, who will teach an intensive medical AI course valid for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. In total, the congress offers up to 12.5 CME credits, in coordination with the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies at the University of Puerto Rico's Medical Sciences Campus (DECEP-UPR).
Among the congress's central topics are the governance and regulation of artificial intelligence in medicine, radiology, surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, psychiatry, medical education, and health equity, along with panels on the ethical and regulatory challenges of adopting AI within Puerto Rico's health system.
According to the "State of AI in Puerto Rico" report (V2A, 2025), 91% of health and pharmaceutical organizations in Puerto Rico already use or are adopting artificial intelligence, without yet having a formal institutional infrastructure for governance, equity, safety, or clinical validation of its use. CHAIC 2026 aims to directly address that gap, positioning Puerto Rico as a bilingual, FDA-regulated market strategically located to lead this conversation in the region.
"In Puerto Rico, we're already using artificial intelligence in clinical practice every day, but we lack the governance, ethics, and validation infrastructure to do it safely. CHAIC 2026 isn't just a conference: it's the first step toward giving the Caribbean its own voice in how AI is regulated and adopted in health care."
— Dr. Orvil Martinez, founder and president of CHAIC
